United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his thoughts on the huge 1-0 win over the Mariners at Brunton Park. It was a tough game to take three points from but it sends Carlisle six points clear at the top of the League Two table with only fifteen points left to gain for the challengers :

" It was a big game for us, we knew it was. I said beforehand that I didn't care how we got the result, it was about getting three points today. It's been a scrappy game, I think we maybe did just edge it on football and chances created, unfortunately today our strikers weren't quite firing and we didn't finish off the moves that we had but we had to dig in.

" We've had to defend strongly at the end when they kept throwing big ones on, I thought they couldn't get any more big ones to come on to it but they found (Ben) Futcher to come into it so we've had to deal with it, and we've dealt with it very well. I have to say that it was the longest three minutes that I've had to sit through at the end and on my watch, I don't know if my watch was wrong, but it seemed more like five than the three he put up.

" I felt as though today was going to be a game where it was the odd goal that would win it and it was a case of having to just defend strongly, and that was the way it has turned out. It's similar to the Lincoln game where we've had to grind the result out and we've taken a little bit of magic to get the winning goal again from Bridgey (Michael Bridges), but the whole team have worked hard to get a result today.

" I think (Keiren Westwood) he had one to save when it has come through a crowd of bodies and it's hit him and we've cleared the danger. As I say, I thought we defended very well in front of him, as a team, the strikers tried as much as they could to stop the balls getting in the midfield, they tracked the runners and all-in-all it was a big, strong performance that's got us a massive three points.

" (A club record seven wins in a row) is wonderful. We keep talking about all these records and awards that keep coming but I'll say the same thing again, there is still only one that we want and that's getting closer but it still seems a long way away and we've still got a lot of work still to do. "

" You know I'm a miserable git and that I'm not going to say that we are on the promotion ladder. We've got to go to Rochdale on Tuesday night and we've got to go and work hard to get another three points. If we then go into the holiday weekend, with two games in the three days, and we're still in this position then I might start thinking that we could be close to it, but at the moment we are very close but it still seems a hell of a long way off.

" Three points at Rochdale would put us another three points clear and that's what we want to do. It might add a little bit of extra zest because of my time there but I'm not really bothered about all that. It's about Carlisle United going there and working hard to get three points in what will be a difficult game, they've picked up a big point at Northampton today and done us a favour. Now we've got to do ourselves another favour on Tuesday and make sure the game in hand is worth something and we get the three points.

" He (Danny Livesey) got a kick right at the back of his ankle so his achilles is very sore and it was seizing up so we need to see how he is tomorrow. Keiren Westwood was a bit sore with his groin, Adam Murray got a nasty kick in his marital gear and hopefully he'll be okay come Tuesday night. All-in-all though I expect them all to be alright, Bridgey was shattered, he's had a bit of a sickness and diarrhea bug so he's felt a bit under the weather but he did enough to help us get three points and hopefully he'll be right come Tuesday.

" It was a big whistle to wait for, the fans have made lot of noise during the game and they keep surpassing everything that they are doing this season. We were all surprised to see that many travel to Cardiff, to get 10,000 here today is brilliant for the football club. We got a great result for the fans, we accept that it wasn't a great game of football but everybody wants to see a winning team and if we win 1-0 in the next game and then at Bristol (Rovers) again, and then on the Bank Holiday Monday at home to Notts County then I think we'll all be happy.

" The last time we went there (Rochdale), the season we got relegated, we had unbelievable support. When I came down the tunnel to see the fans on the far side it was incredible and I'm quite sure we'll have a big number travel again. It's only down the road for us and hopefully they will be there to see us put on a performance that gets another win for us. I hope the Sunday papers run out quickly tomorrow, it is good to look at, it'll look even better in a couple of weeks time if our name has got champions on it. "
