United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke exclusively to BBC Radio Cumbria on Saturday evening as he gave his thoughts on the 4-0 hammering of the Shakers that sees the Blues go second in the League Two table. The result means Carlisle have now lost only one of their last thirteen league games :

" It would be too much for me to say it was the ultimate performance but I thought it was a very, very professional performance today and I’m delighted with the result.

" It’s always a strange one going into it because I said to the players before the game that we have got a top of the table team playing against a team who are down at the bottom. There is only your mind that can stop you from doing things right and winning the game today.

" I felt that our mind was very, very strong today. The top four inches was the bit that won us the game today, the way the players approached it and the way they worked. Even when we were 2-0 up and 3-0 up the players worked and closed and we were ruthless. "

" I’m just delighted because I’m sick to death of people all week saying it is a jinx to get Manager of the Month and you’ll come up on Saturday and you’ll lose. I’m glad that we’ve got that out of the way, got three points and we’re sat in a lovely position.

" You always worry if you score too early. You can’t win with me because if you score too early then you worry that it is going to go against us and if we concede then we’re not happy with the start. Today everything was right it about though, we’ve kept pushing on, we’ve caused Bury a hell of a lot of problems and we’ve been clinical in the way we’ve finished things.

" I’m delighted for Karl (Hawley) to get back on the scoring run. Brendan (McGill) has taken his goal well after a really good run from Simon Hackney and all-in-all it’s a hell of an afternoon’s work. Three points, a clean sheet and really we couldn’t ask for any more.

" Zigor (Aranalde) is getting on a roll. He’s getting into that far-post area where we want him to and where we want all the wide players to. It’s amazing if you get there how many times the ball drops to you and it was a hell of a finish, he’s stuck it away as if he was an out-and-out striker.

" At half-time I said to the players that it was one of those games that I felt that we could have gone really for the jugular and got a bag full of goals. I felt that to score the next goal was the most important thing because if we’d been sloppy about the way we’d started and conceded something then you make it a difficult afternoon. "

" We made it easy for ourselves though because we worked hard and we got that goal right after the break. It settled everybody down and we could then go and play. We passed the ball well, again on a difficult surface. We passed it well, we moved, we had good link up play between the strikers and as I say all-in-all it was a good afternoon’s work for us.

" It was a tremendous performance from the lads that came in but it doesn’t surprise me because I know what they are about. I thought Simon Grand was excellent because he came in and he didn’t try and do anything clever. He just did things right, he was simple about the way he played, he cleared it when it had to be cleared, he put his head in, got his goal and he did everything right.

" Adam Murray has worked hard in midfield and that’s the whole idea of having a big squad, or a strong squad, so that these players can come in when needed.

" It’s been a really busy time for us so we’re delighted that we can have a week’s rest now. Everybody else has been involved in Cup games today and we have had a League game which really pushes us up there and it gives us a nice week to prepare for the next game.

" I’ve nothing to say on the signings front at the moment. We’ll continue to work and we’ve got about four or five games that we’re out watching again next week. We’ll keep working away and if the players keep producing performances like this then anybody who does come in will have to be patient and wait for their chance. We’ll keep looking though and hope that the right ones will come up. "
