Simmo speaks
United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his thoughts on the hard-fought 4-2 win over the Pilgrims at Brunton Park. It was a patchy performance from the Blues, but with Lincoln City hammering second-placed Grimsby Town 5-0 it sees Carlisle go three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand :

" When we talking during the week we said that at this stage of the season that the most important thing is that you get the result, and we've got that today. We've made it very difficult for ourselves though, in the first-half I thought we were very commanding and we had real control of the game, and Boston didn't really trouble us. Then in the second-half we started a little bot sloppy, we've allowed them to put pressure on, we've allowed them to put balls into the box and they've put us under a lot of pressure.

" They deserved to get back close into the game but I was pleased in the end with our finishing and some good goals. Simon Hackney has taken his two goals very well, and, it is a convincing win and a convincing scoreline but we know that the performance has to be better.

" With Lincoln beating Grimsby 5-0 it's been a good day really, that shows what sort of a test we've got on Tuesday night though. That will be a very tough game for us and the thing that we've got to do now is make sure that we're ready for that, make sure we're as well prepared as we possibly can be and go and get another good performance from that one.

" Murph (Peter Murphy) has been struggling with a virus for the last couple of days that has been going around the club, Brendan McGill had a little bit of it as well, Dolly (Neil Dalton), the physiotherapist, has got it as well unfortunately. Peter was just feeling very tired though and we decided to change it and to just try and do something about it."

" I don't think the players were thinking about the Football League Trophy final today, I don't think you could ever say that after the first-half. I thought we were right in the first-half, we tried to make all the right noises in the half-time break, we were saying that we've got to make sure that if there is going to be another goal then we are the ones who get it. We make sure we do the things right, we keep turning them, we keep working them and unfortunately we didn't do that at the start of the second-half. We allowed them to get a lift, we allowed them to get a bit of momentum and that's what gave us the problems in the second-half.

" We've said many a time that Simon is a real impact player, he goes on and runs at people and he gives them problems. He took his first goal very well, the second goal I think he was caught in two minds as to whether to roll it for Karl (Hawley) or to do it himself, and I was delighted he's done it himself. He's causing problems when he does that and he's a major part of our sixteen each game.

" It's going to be a big game against Lincoln. We knew beforehand that it was going to be a very tough game, they are a very direct side, a very physical side, but we know what to expect from them. We've defended well this season, maybe not in the second-half today though where we didn't defend very well as a team.

" We'll start again on Monday morning though, we'll get everybody freshened up ready to go for that game on Tuesday, which now is a very big game because we can give ourselves a little six point cushion and this works as our game in hand. We've got to look to be going and making a six point cushion between us and the next team, and then we can start thinking about a nice day out in Cardiff. Without a doubt though getting the three points is all that counts and it moves us forward and we're delighted with that. "
