United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his thoughts on the excellent away victory against old Conference rivals Barnet. It was a good defensive performance from the Blues that saw them retain their place at the top of the table with supersub Simon Hackney bagging his third goal in two games :

" It’s been a very good week. Today was a difficult game, I have to say that it’s probably one of the ugliest games of football I’ve watched for a long, long time. I thought it was a horrible game, but, the thing we wanted out of it was three points and that’s what we’ve got.

" We’ve shown great character again, we went a goal down and I was a little bit disappointed but then we’ve bounced back straight away. I’m delighted for Derek Holmes, he’s made a tremendous challenge from the kick-off to set Bridgey (Michael Bridges) up, it was a nice reward for him for working hard and especially after the disappointment of giving the goal away.

" We were hoping that Simon Hackney, after getting his first couple of goals last week, would go on a roll. He’s not a bad little weapon to have to throw him on when legs are getting tired. Especially today with this slope and the wind in our favour, we wanted to go and bombard their goal and the young goalkeeper, Simon has put a tremendous finish in which has won us the game.

" It was a great save at the end from Keiren (Westwood), he bounced back well from the goal which we were a little bit disappointed with the way we defended. He pulled off a great save though, he didn’t have a lot else to do but when he was called upon he did his job for the team and we’re all delighted that we’ve got three points against Barnet today.

" We were delighted with the defending in the first-half, that was the first thing I said at half-time. We were really pleased to get in there at half-time and still be 0-0 because I felt that once we got the second-half underway we could put them under a lot of pressure. We didn’t put them under as much pressure as I would have liked but we definitely looked like the team that were going to win it in the second-half.

" You look at the other fixtures going into the game today and I felt that all the teams up in the top places would win. I haven’t seen the results, although I’ve just been told that they all won, so we needed to get the three points. We knew it was an important game, there is always that extra bit of needle coming down here, there were a few of their players being chirpy about the fact that they won the Conference but unfortunately for them that doesn’t actually count for anything at this present moment.

" It doesn’t bother me what happened here last year, this game then to get that point was enough to get us into the play-offs and everybody knows what has happened since then. We are pleased with the way things are going, last season doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that we are top of the league now. We’ve got a bit of momentum going, we want to keep it going, the most important game for us now is next Saturday and we hope that we are all prepared for that.

" We’ve got a couple of little things to rest this week, Kevin Gray still wasn’t right for today, Mark Rivers was ill with this virus that everybody seems to have had. Karl Hawley had to come off because he had blurred vision from the bang that he got in the first-half. There are a lot of the players who have got silly little niggles so it’s a chance for us to really get everybody together.

" We’ve got a reserve game on Wednesday night against Burnley, which the lads who have not been involved today, will get a chance to have a run out to keep their fitness levels up and hopefully we can just keep everybody together and keep moving on. "
