United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his thoughts on the 1-1 draw away to Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium. The point means the Blues now stand just five points away from a second successive promotion :

"A draw was fair enough, I have to say that on the way that we played today that I am satisfied with a point, because it looked for long periods like we weren't going to get anything out of it. I think if we are honest that the performance wasn't there today but the work-rate was, the attitude was right, we just didn't have that quality.

" We didn't get enough out of our three strikers and if you are playing with three strikers and it's not happening then unfortunately you have got a large part of your team which is missing. They kept working though, they kept plugging away. I have to say that I was delighted to see that goal go in and then it was a case of just hanging on but hoping that we might go and nick something and try and get the three (points) ourselves.

" I think that the goal summed us up because we had a little bit of play down the right-hand side, Karl Hawley has worked to go and retrieve it and keep possession. He's laid it back and it was a fantastic ball in from Adam Murray and Simon (Hackney) has popped up at the far-post and nodded it in. It was a big relief more than anything to have got that point because it definitely was a game that was slipping away from us.

" The first goal is to make sure we make the gap definite from that fourth-placed team, we've got another opportunity on Monday and we want to go at home against Notts County and have a right good go. Hopefully improve on the performance today but so far it's been okay and we've just got to go and finish it off and get over that final hurdle. "

" (Zigor Aranalde) had soreness in his ribs, he got it a couple of weeks ago in a game and when he was taking the throw-ins he was just a bit discomforted. There was no way he wanted to leave the field though, he wanted to continue, which doesn't surprise me because that is the attitude we have got from everybody here.

" I'm not sure if Danny (Livesey) is going to be fit for Monday. Danny tried to train on Friday morning because he desperately wanted to play today but he lasted about five minutes, so he had to go out of it, so, I don't expect Danny to play. Glenn Murray I would like to think will be okay, he's just had a sickness bug for a couple of days, we just felt as though he wasn't strong enough to take part today, but I'd like to think that with another 48 hours he should be right for Monday's game. We could be celebrating at the end of Monday but there are a lot of ifs and buts to go on. The first thing we've got to do is win our game, we can't worry about anybody else, we don't want to rely on anybody else, we do our job properly and then we'll take whatever comes.

" We have got to remain unbeaten, the performance can't always be there and I've said this for weeks now. Sometimes you have to just scrap and fight, and you look around and everybody would have expected Grimsby to have won at home to Shrewsbury, that didn't happen though, and I'm quite sure people expected Wycombe to stay up at the top and that hasn't happened. We've just got to keep our heads, not lose sight of where we want to go, not get too excited when we win one and it isn't all over and not to get down we haven't won, like today. We've just got to keep level-headed, keep plugging away and hopefully the big smiles and big parties are still to follow.

" When you are top of the table people's expectations rise and you think you are going to win every game. We go into every game with the intention of winning it but it doesn't always happen. Today we had to just grind it out, we had to roll our sleeves up and do the job for the team. On Monday I would like to think that we have individuals who'll do a better job for the team than they did today. We're still unbeaten, we're still top of the league. Even though the gap has closed a little bit there are all sorts of permutations, but we know it is still in our hands and that's all we want it to be. "
