United player-manager Paul Simpson spoke exclusively to BBC Radio Cumbria yesterday evening as he gave his thoughts on Carlisle's see-saw 4-3 victory that takes the Cumbrians up to fifth place in League Two :

" It was an incredible game, I’m quite sure it was a brilliant game to watch. We’ve made it so hard for ourselves, we’ve come here and we wanted to get a win, that is the first thing. Although I might be critical I’m delighted we have come and won the game because that was the big thing we wanted out of it today.

" It’s a shame that in a game of football like that the person who will probably get a lot of the headlines is the referee and his assistants who put on a performance today probably like I have never seen in football, there were some incredible decisions going on.

" As I say the big thing out of today is that we wanted three points, we wanted to get back to winning ways and although there were a lot of things that we need to tighten up on it’s a big, big win for us.

" Karl Hawley’s finishing was tremendous. His first two goals were excellent they really were. The first one settled us down, we wanted a big start and to take the game onto them and you could see them just dropping when that goal went in.

" Then we stopped, we took the foot off it, we allowed them back in to the game and the goals we conceded were real sloppy goals. Too many times we allowed crosses in, particularly from Phillips on the right-hand side.

" We weren’t tight enough defensively, we’ve given them everything today, as well as a referee’s decision for the penalty. Karl’s finishing was excellent, Kevin Gray has got in the right area for the one at the back-post with a wide free-kick so those are the sort of things we are asking of them.

" We go away with three points to make a much happier long journey not only for ourselves but for the fantastic travelling support that we have had today.

" I thought the penalty was a very, very harsh decision. It’s incredible though, this referee turned up for the game today and at the kick-off when Kevin Gray went up with their captain he didn’t even have a coin to toss up.

" He said ‘heads or tails’ to Kevin, Kevin said ‘heads’ and he said ‘no sorry, tails never fails’. We wanted to turn around because there was a very, very bright sun shining from the end of the ground here.

" Kevin made a complaint, he said ‘no, no, we’ll sort it out’. He picked a piece of grass up off the floor and said ‘which hand is it in?’. That is something that goes on in parks football and that is being disrespectful to parks football.

" How he can turn up for a game like that and make that sort of comment and that sort of decision with what is a big decision is beyond me. If you win the toss, you choose ends. When the sun is shining above the top of the ground and the goalkeeper is going to have to stare into it you want to turn round so that when the sun goes down in the second half it is an advantage.

" That’s how he started and unfortunately that is how he continued. It’s just a shame, I’ll be honest with you, I don’t normally feel sorry for people when we have beaten them because nobody felt sorry for us but I do feel for Leroy (Rosenior – Torquay manager) because he lost his head with him.

" It’s those sort of decisions that when you lose your head can cost you your job, he’s under enough pressure without getting decisions like he got against him today as well.

" Referees do have to justify their actions. We speak to the North-West regional referee coach and we talk about it. They want feedback on how referees have done and unfortunately even though we have won the game today we are going to have to be negative about him because the standard of refereeing has to improve.

" Unfortunately today there were a lot of decisions. Whether it was a free-kick for our final goal I’m not really sure, there were two bodies around, I’m not really sure how much contact there was there.

" We’re delighted to get it, don’t get me wrong, but it’s those little things that do annoy you as a manager and it disappoints you when you go and lose a game. Fortunately today we were on the good end of a decision.

" I’m delighted for Karl, we’ve talked about Karl a lot this season because there are a lot of people who have been very critical of him. He works hard and he’s come back from pre-season flying and it was only a matter of time with the work-rate he was putting in and the chances he was creating that he would get goals.

" He’s got himself up in the leading goalscorer charts but I want him to be greedy. I want him to go and get more goals, I want him to go and work harder and really give everybody at the whole football club a lift, players, staff, supporters, everybody and make himself a hero and why shouldn’t he be.

" The Blackpool job is nothing to do with me. The only reason people are talking about it again is because I was linked last time but I turned it down last time because I didn’t think it was the right time and I didn’t think it was the right thing to do.

" I’m loving every minute of the things that are going on. Even when people are criticising me I can take it. I’m enjoying everything about Carlisle United. I think with the owner, with the directors that we’ve got in place, with the staff that we’ve got in place, with the players that we are trying to bring to the club that everything about this club is positive.

" I want to be a part of it, I’ve had enough negative rubbish to have to put up with. I want to be part of this football club so the Blackpool job isn’t something that I even need to think about. "
