United left-back Sean McDaid spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips after Carlisle's 1-0 pre-season friendly at Workington, summer signing McDaid happy to get some more game time in his legs after two years out of first-team football :

" I enjoyed it, I wasn't expecting 80 minutes, my legs have felt it now but I think it is all in the bank as they say. But I really enjoyed it, it was a good test for us from the other night from Kendal moving on, but it is a clean sheet for the defence and a good win.

" I have not had a pre-season for two seasons now, just over the problems I have had. So, I have been smiling every day even though the running has been hard, it has been enjoyable for me and to get 45 minutes against Kendal was good, and obviously 80 minutes here tonight was even better, so it is looking good so far.

" I think it is a squad game now so everyone has to communicate the same, players coming on and off who try to do the same thing. So, I have enjoyed it so far obviously being beside Ian Harte and Peter Murphy at the back, Danny (Livesey) has got an injury as well so I haven't been able to play with him yet. But I have enjoyed so it far, we worked well tonight as a back four, it is an improvement so it is good.

" It was a good game, similar to an FA Cup tie, coming to their place and they are harassing all around us. It is a good test for us, these are the games you want in pre-season, it will be different on Saturday obviously against a Newcastle team, but Workington, give them a lot of credit and they should do well this year.

" My first job is to defend, I like to get forward as good as I can but tonight our coaching staff said that they (Conor Tinnion and Steven Hindmarch) were two of their better players. Obviously when they are playing against their old club they obviously want to prove something, so I was concentrating a lot on my defending and hopefully everyone was pleased with that. "

" I'm looking forward to playing Newcastle, I was at Doncaster last year so I got to look at Newcastle and they got promoted. They are a good side obviously, one of the biggest clubs I think, they should never have dropped out of the Premier League and hopefully it will be my first game at home. They tell me it will be a big crowd so that is why we are all looking forward to it.

" I'd rather come up against players like Jonas Gutierrez, at the end of the day we all want to play at as a higher level as we can. If you get those players that are playing in a World Cup against you, then you see how good you have to play against them to get up there.

" So, they are all good players, I don't think you can just say that Gutierrez isn't playing. There is (Wayne) Routledge and all them and the wingers as well, so they are all good players and we are looking forward to it. Now we are two divisions below them so it is important for us to get at them like Kendal and Workington have done to us, so I am sure we will put in a good shift.

" In a way, even though as new players we have signed, we are always on trial, it is important for us to have a good start and show why we are here. It is the second or third week in pre-season so we are all working as hard as we can, and we obviously need to improve every game and that is what we are trying to do. "
