'Dale manager Keith Hill spoke to his club's official website after their 4-3 penalty shootout victory at Spotland over Carlisle in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, Hill full of praise for Rochdale youngster Joe Thompson :

"That was more like it. That was the performance that we were looking for. I wanted the lads to respond in the right manner and they did and some of our passages of play warranted more reward, We played against a very good Carlisle side who themselves want to play the game in the right way and it was a fair and equal contest.

"We challenged the players after Saturday's game and I was really disappointed with it but today was about building blocks and getting back to basics. We played and passed with a courage and built trust blocks again. I can trust the players and they trust the decisions that I make so all in all it was a good advertisement for football and a lot learned and achieved.

"If you look for example at Joe Thompson who was tremendous on the night he is only 19 but I have the courage to pick these players and I trust them. We have got to back them because if not they will fall by the wayside. There is talent there and there is a real hunger from Joe and it was a superb performance. It was work-based but added to his ability and energy he did really well. Chris Dagnall, Lee Thorpe and indeed all of them performed when and where they were asked. On another day we would have won comfortably."
