Reaction From Yeovil Boss Gary Johnson

Town manager Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Radio Somerset after his side's 3-3 League One draw against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Johnson understandably gutted at the Glovers conceding two late goals:

“It hurts a lot. And you've got to ask how much it hurts them. I think there were a couple that didn't finish the game off. Of course you're going to be gutted aren't you, when there's two goals late on when we were looking comfortable and when we'd put in a real good 20 or 25 minutes and done our job. Then all of a sudden people started hitting the wrong ball at the wrong time, jumping out of tackles, and not quite winning things. So, I am very, very disappointed at the minute.

“There was no going beyond that call of duty. I'm just thinking of the fans up there that are on this trip, that is going beyond the call of duty,  and we can't get a group of players to do that at the moment. There's some that do, but there's some that don't. They're the same ones every week, but I can't change it at the moment.

“Anyway, that's where we are, and of course I'm gutted. But I don't know what to say, I’ll be honest with you, because we're still there or thereabouts. If I decide to be a shrinking violet myself, then it's going to catch, and it's going to be caught by the players. So, I've just got to keep pushing and shoving and probing.  We're having to do too much on the line really with this group, you know what I mean, to make them to believe that they can get there.

“We’re missing the warriors. But it's hard to find the warriors. When you've got a group of warriors, they see the last few minutes through when you're 3-1 up because they go and win everything and they make tackles. We allowed Carlisle to keep putting the ball into the box, and then we were a bit weak, and then we couldn't put the ball in behind them for that last couple of minutes. Then we couldn't keep it when we got the ball in behind them so we lost it.

“There were just lots of little things. But, listen, I hope this interview is a short one, because otherwise you  end up saying a lot more than you really want to say. We're not in a (bad) position and we're in a much better position than Carlisle. I'm sure their manager has thought a lot more about his team than I have in that light that I've just been saying. But, it's a dagger in the heart isn’t it when you draw 3-3 when you're 3-1 up.”

“I've got to try to lift the players now haven't I? Me, Terry (Skiverton) and Darren (Way) have got a massive job to do to keep them competitive. Some of them have got it, and some just aren't competitive enough. You've got to go with a group of people that you can trust and are going to fight hard for you, do you know what I mean. We'll see, some of them may still be a bit inexperienced to know where their 100% is.

“It was a fantastic performance from Paddy Madden, he's one that does chase lost causes and he does go beyond the call of duty, which is why he's going to make a terrific living out of the game. There are a couple of others, I thought Byron Webster played quite well today. He was solid when we needed him to be solid at the start of the game, when Danny Burn was having a little bit of a dickie time.

“But, it may be things that they haven't learned yet, it may be things that they haven't picked up yet, it may be I don’t know……….. With these games if you're mid-table, you're not as passionate as I am to get to where we want to get, maybe 3-3 away at Carlisle isn't a bad result. But, it's just the position that we were in and I'm not going to make that a good result.

“If you bring in loan players, then there are loads of loans available out there, and the reason why they are available is because not many clubs want them. It's very difficult to get a loan that gives you what you want. Because, a lot of players are like that, they're just drifting through the game, drifting from club to club.

“They might be decent players, but it's whether they've got that 'going beyond the call of duty' which you need at this stage you don’t know. So me, Terry and Darren will sit down and we'll think very hard. We'll keep pushing, I promise, I absolutely promise that we will, I'll drag every ounce that we've got out of them and we'll have to see how far we can get.”
