Reaction From Shrewsbury Boss Graham Turner

Town manager Graham Turner spoke to his club's official website after his side's 2-2 League One draw against Carlisle at the Greenhous Meadow Stadium, Turner unhappy from a refereeing perspective with both United goals:

“When you go 2-1 down it is a point gained, but overall I think it is two lost. I have just had an opportunity to have a look in slow motion on the wide angle and I think we are a bit unfortunate with the two goals. First of all, I think the lad who scored the first one [David Amoo] was in an offside position when the cross came in, it could be and has been deemed that he wasn’t interfering with play. But, he was in the middle of the goal and the wide angle lens clearly shows that at the point it was crossed he was probably two and a half yards offside.

“For the second one I felt it was a foul, and again we have had the opportunity to look at it on the DVD, both wide angle and close up, and I don’t think there is any doubt in my mind that it was a foul on Ryan Woods that led to the goal. Having said that, we should have dealt with that better, I mean the header is four yards from goal when he [Sean O’Hanlon] has got his head to it.

“The first one, although I have said we were a bit annoyed about the manner in which it has gone in, we should have done more about the throw-in on our left-hand side, we have allowed the cross in too easily. That has led to problems, what we are trying to do is to let the players drop too deep, but when you don’t get an offside decision like the first goal then it causes you problems.

“I think we played reasonably well and got ourselves into one or two very good goalscoring positions, or positions to produce chances at the end that we should have done better with on the break. I know whoever we come up against, and I said at half-time to the players, teams will do an assessment on us and we have got this little spell of conceding late goals and they will stick a lot of balls into our box. But, what you have got to do is pick them off on the break and we had good positions and should have done better with them."

“It was edgy, I don’t think for one or two of the youngsters we have got in there I don’t think it was a particularly bad performance. I think we passed the ball into good areas, we moved forward well and we got ourselves into good positions. So, I don’t think it was a poor performance by any means, certainly not a performance that deserved a defeat. So, in the end we have shown a bit of character at 2-1 down in the dying stages to come back and get something out of it.

“Paul Parry showed a cool head, he has played at a good level, he has played in FA Cup finals, he has played international football, and if you wanted to stick somebody on the ball in that position late in the game to save us a point then I would pick Paul Parry out, he finished it extremely well. Tom Bradshaw though has scored five goals and he can score, that is his strength. If anybody looked at him at this stage of the season as a striker or goalscorer, you would say his return for the number of starts he has had is quite decent.

“For me though today if you can have a whole barrow load of emotions and mix it up then that is what the feeling is. The feeling that for the majority of the game we looked competent, I think we just get a bit edgy when we try to pass the ball and probably go back a little bit too often. But, I think what you want from your players then is to try to pick passes out and if they can’t then you go back and try to start out of other side.

“We probably should have been a bit more adventurous at times, but having said that I thought for the vast majority of the game we played reasonably well. The goals going in against us, the clock doesn’t tick fast enough from 85 minutes onwards, I will analyse whether we should have made changes and whether that would have made any difference. But, I felt that up until the 85th minute we had a reasonable shape and a reasonable performance from us defensively. So, I didn’t see the threat coming but there we are.”
