Reaction From Shrews Boss Graham Turner

Town manager Graham Turner spoke to his club's official website after his side's 2-2 League One draw against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Turner disappointed with United equalising quickly after both Shrewsbury goals:

“I think it is a missed opportunity ultimately, I think it is disappointing that they were allowed to get at us both times immediately after we scored. But, for the first one I think that we are not a demonstrative side and you can tell from the reaction of the players that it was a decision that shouldn’t have been.

“Talking to them in there it didn’t Luke Summerfield at all on the arm or hand, and I think the referee was totally unsighted for it and it was an amazing decision according to all the people who were around the situation, because where we are you can’t have a clear picture of it. Our downfall was allowing them to get in those positions immediately after we scored on both occasions.

“Matt Richards said for his goal that the goalkeeper (Mark Gillespie) was a long way over, but he obviously got a strong hand to it. But, with those free-kicks if you get them on target there is always a chance they will finish up in the back of the net, if you put them over the bar there is no chance.

“For the second one it is time we got goals from our central defenders when they go up for set-pieces, it wasn’t one that you would expect but we have got to be starting to score between now and the end of the season from one or two set-plays. But, settling down on the journey home we will probably consider it a point gained rather than anything lost, but right at the moment it feels like two lost.

“On the second penalty I think the lad (Jon-Paul McGovern) was always going down before contact was made with Chris (Weale). We shouldn’t have been caught in the position we were in, we shouldn’t have had him exposed like he was, but I think that it sounds like from the way the players are talking about it that there was some contact but the lad was already on his way down before that contact was made."

“Darren Jones has gone off to hospital and it looks like he has dislocated his shoulder. So, something like that could keep him out for the rest of this season. That makes it four central defenders injured now, so we are down to bare numbers and the transfer deadline has come and gone. So, it is something we will have to face but I thought young Connor Goldson went in at the deep end and did OK. He kept his concentration and headed the ball well and defended well.

“We know James Hurst can play, we know he can do a good job, and I think we should have reacted better when we put him in from a free-kick right around the back. It should have been a little tap-in for somebody but we didn’t react quickly enough, he did but nobody else did. We know he can play and he will just see us through to the end of the season.

“Akwasi Asante is one that has a record of scoring goals. He has missed a little bit of football a fortnight ago with an injury, but he has played two games for Birmingham reserves recently. He is another one that we can add to it. What we have got is a situation that we don’t know how long we are going to keep Tom Eaves, although he has signed for another month there is the 24-hour recall and I think that Bolton felt that sometime in the month they might have to call him back. So, we are keeping our fingers crossed that results go well for them and they don’t need him.

“I made changes in midfield because we have got another game on Monday, and I think David McAllister has been fighting for a little bit of form, working hard but he is fighting for a little bit of form. Stephen McGinn is a decent player and it is an unfortunate position I am in, Stephen has had to sit patiently and wait and I thought him and Luke did well enough today. But, it is another game on Monday so maybe David might be back, he might be but he might not be.

“The supporters have followed us all over the place and we have had tremendous support away from home. I think of MK Dons and the number we took to Crewe and the noise they made. It was a hell of a long journey for them on a Good Friday and it is appreciated. Those who have not made it because of the traffic have got my sympathy.”
