Owls boss Alan Irvine
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine spoke to BBC Radio Sheffield after his side's 3-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Irvine saying referee David Webb not awarding his side a penalty early in the second-half was an incident that could have changed the game :

" Obviously, a disappointing performance, I thought that we looked quite good for most of the first-half, and the goal rocked us and we never really recovered in the first-half from that. I thought we came out quite well in the second-half, obviously had a big claim for a penalty at 1-0 and then we didn't do well after that until near the end.

" It was an incident that could have changed the game. JJ (Jermaine Johnson) was bearing in on goal and the goalkeeper (Adam Collin) wasn't going to catch him. Why would he have gone down if he wasn't caught? But the referee (David Webb) didn't give it and I think that affected us a little. It was a massive moment, until that point we had been the better team.

" Neil Mellor is better than we feared, at first we thought it might have been something very serious but he is putting weight on it now so that is a good sign, but we will just need to assess him tomorrow.

" He has twisted his ankle so we will see how he is, but he couldn't feel his ankle at the time so we feared the worst as far as that was concerned. But, we certainly are happier now with how he is then when it first happened. But, I'm not sure whether it was something to do with the pitch or just a challenge.

" It was difficult conditions but it was difficult conditions for both teams. I think the pitch was playable, not easy to play on and it affects the way that you are going to play as well. It was important that the risk element was taken out of it and I think that both teams probably did that. But, they did it better than us.

" All the saves Nicky Weaver had to make were all in the same period really, those chances, they were all after they had got the second goal and there is no doubt that they gave them a big boost and we really wobbled at that point. We had to survive that period, which we didn't do, we conceded a third goal and that obviously made it very difficult for us to get back.

" We had a couple of chances towards the end when it was 3-1, if we had got one of them with a bit of time to spare then who knows? But, we didn't. Obviously the league is our priority, there is no question about that but it doesn't mean that I didn't want to win this game and it doesn't mean that I didn't want us to get to Wembley. "
