North End manager Alan Irvine spoke to the official Preston website about the 2-2 pre-season draw with Carlisle at Brunton Park today, Irvine heaping praise on the performance of Lilywhites frontman Simon Whaley :

"Two good goals from the strikers. There was an opportunity to play Simon as a striker because Chris Brown rocked his ankle the other night against Everton, Karl Hawley has got a sore foot and Brett (Ormerod) played the other night, so there was an opportunity to play Simon in a role that I think he can play.

"He's a great striker of the ball, a very clean kicker of the ball and when he actually created the space I wasn't surprised to see it smash into the back of the net. I don't think I am discovering anything that other people haven't already discovered, I saw him playing in that role for Bury, I went to watch him when I was at Everton and he played as a striker and I think he is able to do that. He's a versatile player and a lovely kicker of the ball.

"You want your centre-forwards to be scoring goals and Mells (Neil Mellor) deserves an awful lot of credit for that, people will see the finish and think that he can score from there, but what they don't maybe see is the work in order to get there.

"He really sprints to get into goalscoring positions and he does that better than many other strikers, he works incredibly hard to get into the goalscoring positions and that makes the goal. He's got a real hunger when he gets into those positions.

"It was another good exercise, a good workout for the lads, we passed the ball well in the main, a bit slowly at times and I wasn't too happy with that. When we did up the tempo we did look like we were a bit more threatening than we have maybe looked in one or two of the other games.

"We scored a couple of really good goals, conceded a couple of really disappointing goals but I will hold my hand up because we have not done anything on set plays and we have lost one from a throw-in and one from a corner. We will be better organised than that by the time it all starts."
