Barrow boss Phil Wilson spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening as he talked about the Bluebirds' pre-season friendly against United at Holker Street tomorrow :

" We need to thank Carlisle for coming down tomorrow because it should get a few fans on the gate and it should be a good game. It's very early days in pre-season, players are trying to get fit and hopefully it will be a good game of football. There are quite a lot of untruths in football, names that are thrown up which you don't know where they come from. When you do get a player you try to keep it as quite as possible until you've actually got pen to paper.

" There are a number of times in football that you think you've got a player, and if you let it out before you've actually got him then at the last minute you lose him. So you've got to wait until the last minute when they have signed the paper, he's 100% coming to the club, you've got him then and then you can let it out.

" The pitch is in really good condition, I was down on Wednesday and had a good look at it and it's in great condition. We just hope it dries up a little bit tomorrow because we don't want big chunks coming out of it at this time of the year. It'll be good though and I'm sure Neil (McDonald) will tell you the same, this time of the year is about getting players on the pitch, giving them play time and getting them match fit with the sole purpose of having them right for the first game of the season.

" We underachieved last year and we've changed things around quite a lot, we've got a lot of experienced lads in at this level. Obviously we've kept what we thought was the better players so what we're hoping now is to kick on. I don't think there will be a bedding in period for these new players, I think they know what the league is about and they know quite a lot of the other lads in the team. It's about us getting going, getting our match fitness up and making sure that we do come out of the blocks quickly at the start of the season. "
