Peter Murphy Talks About The Game

United defender Peter Murphy (PM) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 2-0 League One loss at home to Crawley, Murphy understandably disappointed with the two goals the Blues conceded:

JP

Funny old game today wasn't it, can't quite understand how you guys haven't won?

PM

Yeah, I think we have had a few of them over the years where you are putting teams under pressure so many times, you are trying to score and getting a lot of chances, a lot of crosses into the box, and then eventually with the counter-attack the other team seems to score. Disappointed with the two goals we have conceded today because they were from our own mistakes, the first one was from Mark Gillespie throws a quick ball out to Chris Chantler, the ball breaks down and we are already not set up in our shape.

The full-back (Nathan Byrne) had a run on us, just got into me, goes past me, you try to take him down but because it is so quick you can't really take him down. Then he gets to Danny Livesey and he has just stepped to the side because we are not set up in our shape to defend, we thought we were trying to defend and showing people down the line, down the line so it is away from our goal, but when the ball breaks down so quick they are coming at you and it is hard to defend against that.

Then the second one we had the ball, tried to switch it out to Kallum Higginbotham, he didn't see a man coming, we get a throw-in, we try to take it quick, lose possession of that and then they are into our back four again. Which is the sort of stuff we were told on Wednesday night not to do because we would get punished, and then we do it today and we get punished. So, they are the little lessons you have got to learn because we are still at a good level, I know Tottenham are in the Premier League, but in League One we are in a good level as well and you get punished for mistakes that you do make.

JP

The second goal was unfortunate on United because it was a deflection, I mean they can either go in or not, the first one though was one that did get the fans going because a right-back running that far, you have talked about why it happened but still the fact that it did happen must be disappointing for everyone?

PM

It is just the way it happened. As I said, when the ball gets thrown out from Mark to Chris Chantler, Chris Chantler is trying to chip a ball into Matty Robson and it doesn't get there. The full-back has cut it out and then straight away he is into our back four, there is no midfield there for protection, the little lad is quick as well so he gets a run on you and you are stood there as a defender stood flat-footed really.

He knocks the ball past me, and I tried to grab him to try to pull him down, but because I am flat-footed and he is in full flight it is hard to take him down. Then even Danny Livesey because he has been caught, we are trying to come out as we have been defending, we have been trying to come out and you get turned around again. But, it was a good finish by the lad as well when he gets into the box, but he should never have got to the box in the first place, that is our own mistakes from the team.

Then the second goal again, Danny Livesey is very unfortunate, he has done well to get his body in front of it, but it should never have got to that stage where he has to do that. You always say that as defenders that is what you are paid to do, but when you look at it you shouldn't be put in those positions, well not that you shouldn't be, we don't want to be put in those positions.

If the shape is set up right then they shouldn't get into our back four, the midfield is there for protection and that would never happen. But, you look at if from the other point of view and we have created a lot of chances today, which is a very good thing. Joe Garner on another day would have had four or five goals, he is very disappointed with himself in the changing room, but he knows that come another day he could take those chances and we could be flying.

JP

Do you think he just needs one because he could have had four today couldn't he?

PM

Yeah, well any striker just needs one, the first goal, and then they hopefully start flying from there. When Danny Graham was here at one point people were saying that he hadn't scored in ten games or something like that, and then he goes and starts and doesn't stop scoring after that. So, yeah, strikers is all about scoring goals, if they are having a lot of chances and not scoring they start thinking what do they have to do.

But, I am even telling Joe in there, just keep making those runs, keep making those runs, the chances will come and when you take the chances it will go in. Another day they will go in, he had a great header there today, he caught it perfectly and it went straight to the goalkeeper (Paul Jones), just like at Coventry he had another header the exact same.

On another day if he doesn't catch it so well it goes in the bottom corner, these are the margins for error. It didn't happen today, but if you are putting teams under pressure and under pressure so much then I think it affects our fans, it affects the players that haven't scored and it gives the other team a lift and they go up the other end and catch us out with us, because we are playing and pushing and pushing for a goal, we maybe do things that we shouldn't be doing like I said about the playing out and losing the shape. So, it is little lessons you learn, we have got another game on Tuesday and we are still on a good run, so it is how we react to Tuesday.

JP

Joe Garner comes here to a place where he knows he is loved, but you can see he is desperate to just get that goal to sort of almost relaunch himself?

PM

Yeah, well I think it is like they say about a striker when they move, I think there is the likes of Karl Hawley as well who got a move away from here after doing so well. It is not that struggle to get their form, it is just whether they are given the chance.

Joe hasn't been given a chance to get a run of games, I think he went out to Scunthorpe on loan and at the time he went to Scunthorpe on loan they were like down the bottom of the league and it is hard for a striker there to get created chances from the team. If they are not doing so well it is hard for the team to create chances for him. So, yeah, hopefully he can get a couple of goals here, kick on his career again and if he scores goals for us then it is all well and good for us as well.
