Peter Murphy
United defender cum midfielder Peter Murphy (PM) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after Carlisle's 1-0 League One win at home to Wycombe, Murphy saying that the players are remaining level headed despite their recent run of good form :

JP

Another win, five unbeaten now in the league, it is going rather well for the club all of a sudden?

PM

Yeah, in the space of, I think it is four weeks, it has turned around from looking very grim to everybody thinking now we are going to go for the play-offs. But the players aren't thinking that at all, I think there was something in the paper earlier on in the week, Kevan Hurst saying something that was sensationalised.

But I don't think Kevan Hurst said that himself, it is the media drumming it up as you like to do. If we are doing bad it is the worst thing ever, if we are doing alright it is the best thing. So we just try to keep level headed and see where we go.

JP

The game itself today, how do the players feel about that. I mean you should have had it won at an absolute canter but you got the job done in the end?

PM

Yeah, I don't think you should ever say that you should have had a game won at an absolute canter. Because a couple of weeks ago, you go back to the Norwich game where in the second-half they didn't have a chance really but they like to pass the ball around where Wycombe are a totally different team.

They are going to come out, pump long balls up to the big forwards, it is going to be a battle and that is what it was second-half. First-half we found it quite easy, passing the ball around, we got the goal from a set-piece, another set-piece goal which is very good. But you are going to expect a fightback in the second-half and that is what we got and we had to dig in right to the end.

JP

When I say at a canter though, it was no disrespect to Wycombe, I just mean with the chances that you did create. You had that many good chances on goal that something really ought to have gone in perhaps?

PM

Well we got one so we are happy with that, a 1-0, we will take that any day. Vincent (Pericard) wasn't very happy with his chance in front of the goal where one of the defenders made a great tackle. You can't account for that, that is great defending and I was even clapping on the field for the defender rather than the move we made because it was a great tackle. Yeah we had chances but they had chances as well and they didn't put them away, so it works both ways doesn't it.

JP

Peter Murphy in the centre of midfield, people have been saying for years that that is where you really should play all the time with the way you move the ball around. How do you enjoy it in there?

PM

I love playing so I don't mind, but saying that, midfield you can get up and down the pitch and you can get involved in the play. Whereas at the back you are just waiting to defend, so it is great to get out there and play because you get so frustrated in sitting on the sidelines, but I like playing football.

JP

Let's talk about that, because we did talk about that with your manager Greg Abbott last night about your future. How happy are you out of the team as things were at the moment to continue with Carlisle United?

PM

To continue with Carlisle United I am happy but I am just not happy out of the team. I don't think any player sitting on the bench is happy when they feel like they can give something to the team. But that is just football, it is matters of opinion, fans say that I should play in midfield or whatever.

So it just the way things go, you have got to see it out a little bit and see what happens, football can change. I get my chance today, I would hope to play on Tuesday night, you never know what the manager is going to think, it didn't happen after Norwich but you just have to get on with it.

JP

You have got 18 months left on your contract though and Greg was quick to stress that and to say that you always remain in his plans and you are a very valuable member. Because some fans were texting into our show last night and the feeling was with some of them that you are almost certain to go in January because you have not been getting the chance, what is your immediate situation?

PM

My immediate situation is that I just played in a game and we won 1-0, so we will wait and see what happens after that. I can't do anything else about that, who knows what is going to happen in the future. So we just wait and see, everybody has opinions as I said about everything, the media can sensationalise things, the fans will do that to try to get a reaction out of people. So it just up to us to get down and play our football and see if you can get back into the team and if you do then do well, that is all you can ask.
