Peter Murphy On His Winning Goal

Last updated : 22 March 2011 By Thetashkentterror

Peter MurphyUnited centre-half Peter Murphy (PM) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after Carlisle's 1-0 win at home to Bournemouth, Murphy seemingly not very interested in the latest Rugby Union score :

JP

You will be delighted to know as well that Ireland are winning 14-0 against England, do you care about that sort of thing?

PM

Not so much, football more, but it is nice to hear.

JP

Look, what about today's game, it was a bit of a scrappy affair and it was a truly scrappy goal that won it for Carlisle and for you?

PM

Yeah, it was, I think the way we started and set up it was better for us, I think that in the second-half we had to change it a little bit and it gave them more opportunities to get forward and put us under pressure. So, it was a game of two halves and all that, I think they did put us under pressure but they were obviously 1-0 down. But, we had a few more chances that if we had taken them then it would have been a bit more comfortable, but it is always going to be the same if you don't take the chances. But, we got the win so that is what counts.

JP

Did you think you had scored a second when you got there ahead of Shwan Jalal? It was an interesting one wasn't it, it was a very deep free-kick in to the edge, it teased him off his line and you beat him to it and it went agonisingly wide?

PM

Yeah, when I got my head on it I looked and I knew it wasn't going right in, I thought it might have come off the post so I followed it in like any good striker would do. But, it wasn't to be, it went about a couple of yards wide and I didn't get my second goal.

JP

What did you make of the game as a whole? Because, obviously your role in there was to defend first and foremost and United were resolute against a team with a bit of pace about them. It can't have been an entirely easy afternoon, although you guys at the back perhaps did make it look so at times.

PM

Yeah, I think in the last couple of weeks, the Southampton game where we have defended well and we went down to ten men and did well. We came up against Peterborough who are in the top of the league and they gave us a very tough game. Brighton the same, but we did well against them getting goals, and then we came up against Bournemouth today who were going to be another side.

We said earlier on in the week that it was going to be tough and that we need to get ourselves mentally right for it, and we came out on top today They are a young side just like ourselves, they had a great start to the season and we did well and got on top of them today, their midfield did that to us down there and we did it to them today, so it was good having the experience with Lubo (Lubomir Michalik) and (Paul) Thirlwell which has helped us in the last couple of games. So, long may it continue.

JP

Into your fifth century of appearances as a Carlisle player, what does that feel like to have that sort of time with one team? It is rare in the game these days?

PM

It is rare but you look at the big lad (Steve) Fletcher upfront today that came on for them and he has been there 18 years he has just told me. So, it is not that often you see that nowadays but for me I just want to play as many games as I can. I haven't played as many this season as I would have liked, so any game that I can play this year is a bonus for me and I will take it with both hands.

JP

Still a way short of Alan Ross, the overall appearance holder for Carlisle United, however his family have been in touch with BBC Radio Cumbria to say that if anyone is to pass Alan's record then they would be delighted if it were you.

PM

Well, that is very kind of them but they are probably only saying that because I have got no chance, It is only if I got close to him they would be getting a bit worried. But, it is targets like that that you have to aim for, it is like in the league where you are aiming to get as high as you can, you are aiming to play as many games as you can, strikers are aiming to get as many goals as they can. So, they are the things that keep you going and it gives you targets to set for yourself.

JP

A vocal home support which was up by 1,000 on the midweek game as well, I couldn't quite tell today whether they were united behind you or united with you against the referee (Bobby Madeley) today. You don't have to comment on the referee, but what was it like to have the fans back here in better numbers?

PM

It is always great, we said that even from the Conference days when you have the fans getting behind you that it gives you that lift, especially in periods of games when it is not going so well for you. They get behind you and support you and it gives you that lift and the confidence, it is good. The referee, it is his first season I think in this league isn't it, so it is tough for him.

I had a go at him after about 20 minutes because he gave a throw-in against us, we took the throw-in and he said it was too far forward and he changed it round. I had a go at him about that, I didn't know it was his first season and he asked me what was up and said that it was only 20 minutes and that that was all he had done wrong. So, I felt a bit sorry for him a little bit as well because the pressure is on him. I think John Nixon was just saying that he is still in with the assessors downstairs in the referee's room, so the assessor might be having a few words with him and telling him what he did or did not do wrong, so it is tough on him as well.

JP

A couple of important matches now away from home, in the greater scheme of things for where you are going to finish this season now ahead of Wembley. And Brentford who you are playing at Wembley first, that should be an interesting eye-opener for everyone?

PM

Yeah, it probably will be, everybody might read a bit too much into that, it is a Wembley game and a cup game and it is a one-off occasion. So, as far as we are concerned Brentford is our next game and that is the one we have got to look forward to and just concentrate on. I don't think you can look too far ahead, and we have been fortunate that the team has been doing quite well. Not looking like sometimes teams can slack off a bit before a big game and we have been lucky that we haven't done that. So, Brentford is another big game and hopefully we go there and get a win or a draw.

JP

It would be nice to go into the Wembley final, I know that you are being told as players not to talk about that, but it would be nice to go into that one with a couple of good results in the bag now on the back of this one?

PM

It is nice to go into every next game with a couple of good results. So, it is just the way it goes in the season, if you have lost a couple of games it is always the media drumming it up that it is going to be tough, it is going to be tough. So, yeah, it is nice to go into it with a couple of wins but the next game is going to be very tough as well because in this league anybody can beat anybody. It is all about consistency and the level that we are at there are not that many teams that are very, very consistent, it is only the likes of Brighton that are.

JP

And just finally I must mention, I noticed in the week that you are the current centrefold in Carlisle Living, what was that like as an experience for you? Chris Lumsdon to my left is cringing at that one, he was never asked himself I suspect.

Lumsdon

He loved it.

PM

You guys on the radio have got faces for radio and I have got a face for magazines. No, it is nice, I think that was more for my missus with the baby on the way and the cup final coming, so it was nice to get her in the picture there, obviously she didn't want to get in because she was pregnant but she looked beautiful as it was.
