Peter Murphy

United centre-half Peter Murphy (PM) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Mike Parr (MP) this morning after what could be called, at least, an interesting few days for the Dubliner at the end of last week :

MP

A fairytale weekend for you then?

PM

Yeah, it has been an unbelievable few days for me and for my family, and especially for the likes of Carlisle and everything, so it was a good weekend all round.

MP

And I gather you have chosen a name now for your new son?

PM

We have, we chosen Oscar, Oscar Murphy.

MP

Yeah, because people had been suggesting on the radio station that it could have been Archie?

PM

Why Archie?

MP

Given the Wembley Arch you see, that is what they are thinking, or Johnstone maybe given the sponsor of the Paint Trophy Final.

PM

Everybody has got their own ideas, I have heard of Matt as well because it is a form of paint, there are loads of different ones.

MP

So, take us back to last Friday then when the baby was born, how did all that pan out?

PM

My partner Lisa was in labour all night on Thursday night, we were supposed to leaving at 9am on Friday to travel down to London with the football team. So, I just waited until I knew what was happening with Lisa really, then phoning the physio Neil Dalton and telling him that I was a bit delayed so I wouldn't be able to make the coach. They were fine with that, they just wanted to make sure obviously that everything was alright with Lisa and the baby before they knew what I was going to be doing. I just had to make my way down in the afternoon, I only got to spend about an hour or so with Lisa and Oscar before I had to make it on the train down to London.

MP

So, all sorts of things at that time must have been going through your mind?

PM

I was too tired to be honest with you because it is hard work, it is amazing seeing a woman giving birth, it is hard work for them but it is also hard work for the Daddies.

MP

So did you get much sleep then ahead of the game on Sunday?

PM

By the time I travelled down to London, I got down to London about 8pm and joined up with the team and we had our evening meal, and I just went straight to bed then and I slept through the next morning to go to training.

MP

And amazing to see your wife and the baby at Wembley on Sunday?

PM

Yeah, she is an unbelievable girl, I think my mother was coming over from Ireland and everything so Lisa wanted to get down and show off the baby, and also just to be down to support me, and like I say, she is an unbelievable girl.

MP

And then it all went incredibly well on the pitch this year. How much, I hope you don't mind me asking but how much stick did you get this time last year for what went on then?

PM

I don't think I got much stick to my face but I am sure I got a lot elsewhere, the media was buliding it up and saying that everything was my fault because the handball was the one thing that stood out. There were a lot of individual mistakes and errors on the day but mine stands out in the memory. So, I didn't get so much stick to my face but it is nice to turn it around a year later.

MP

But, then you put it right, which is absolutely fantastic?

PM

Yes it is, it was fantastic for Carlisle as well, for the fans, because I live here, it gives you a great feeling of pride as well, so it is great the way everything has turned out, it has been a perfect weekend, a dream.

MP

Now you are out of contract at Carlisle United in the summer aren't you? Do you expect a new deal now?

PM

Well, I am not out of contract because I had a clause in my contract that if I played a certain amount of games this season then I would get a year extension because that would be my testimonial year. I managed to reach that certain amount of games earlier on in the season, so I have got a year but I have spoken to the manager (Greg Abbott) and John Nixon and just asked if maybe I could get an extension to that. So, I think we are just going to maybe talk about that.

MP

So, have you had a chance to celebrate or even get a lie-in? What have you been doing over the last 24 hours?

PM

After the game I spent a couple of hours with Lisa and the little baby because we had to try to name him because we hadn't had a chance to talk really since he was born. So, then I went down after to the team hotel downstairs and had a couple of drinks with everybody celebrating, travelled back up yesterday and then came back to normality up here in Carlisle and had my first night with the little boy last night. He kept me up a little bit so I am a bit tired again.

MP

You will have to get used to that.

PM

Yeah, that is what everyone keeps telling me.
