Blues skipper Paul Thirlwell
United skipper Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips after Carlisle's 3-1 opening day defeat at home to Brentford, Thirlwell suggesting later on that the Blues didn't do their jobs at either end of the pitch :

" It is obviously disappointing, we came here today full of optimism, as I am sure everyone else did. We got off to a bad start conceding a goal fairly early on, I don't know when it was, but we reacted well and had a lot of possession and a lot of corners and eventually got the penalty shortly after. Then we felt that we finished the half well on top.

" We were excited at half-time to the fact that we could come out and get about them and go and win the game but unfortunately we have conceded a couple of sloppy goals and it wasn't to be. They were three sloppy goals on our behalf, as a team we didn't defend properly at those times and you get punished for that at this level. Unfortunately we couldn't then go on and get the goals that we needed.

" We now need to knuckle down, we need to look at where we have gone wrong, we need to be tighter defensively as a team from set-pieces and basically not be as easy to beat in terms of giving sloppy goals away. We haven't won or lost anything in terms of the bigger picture this season today but it is obviously disappointing to lose on the opening day.

" We basically just need the fans to stay with us. It is disappointing, no-one likes losing games, players and fans alike. I don't think that it was the worst display that they will have seen by us, I think that we must have had about 30 corners, we just failed to capitalise. They went up the other end and they got the goals when they had their chances and that is the kind of dividing line in the game really.

" To the fans it is obviously disappointing for them, they have turned up in their numbers again today and we haven't managed to get a result. I know what the fans are like though, they will be out here again on Tuesday night and they will be cheering for us. We just have to come in on Monday, dust ourselves down, don't feel sorry for ourselves and come out and put in a positive performance against Oldham.

" I think that we got in a lot of attacking areas and I think that we had a lot of crosses coming into the box. Granted at times they might have been in the wrong areas but I think that the game came down to the fact that we didn't defend properly in our own box, and we were unfortunate to a certain extent, but we didn't score when the ball went into their box. That is no criticism of the forwards or defenders, that is a criticism of the eleven players that were out there. We didn't do the jobs at the right end of the pitch well enough today and we lost the game. "
