United skipper Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey after Carlisle's 3-1 home win over Brighton, midfielder Thirlwell talking about a first victory in 13 league cup and games for the Blues :

" It was good all round today, to be fair to the lads they have had some criticism over the last few weeks and rightly so as we haven't been producing. Today though we were all at it, it was the Carlisle of old if you like, or the Carlisle of two months ago, whatever you want to call it. We were back at it, the lads played well to a man and thoroughly deserved the victory.

" He (Michael Liddle) was fantastic, you would think that he had been here all season. He settled right in, good on the ball, defended ever so well against Joe (Anyinsah). Obviously you saw Joe come out after an hour, it wasn't his day, but Joe is a big strong lad. He (Liddle) is hard-working, he did ever so well at 18 years of age, he is only going to get better which is good for Carlisle.

" We were in a bad run but we knew that we weren't a bad team, and the fans know that we are not a bad team. The fans know that we are not a bad team but it just took us a hell of a long time to realise that fact. Today we have gone out there, Greg (Abbott) just had it on the board as simple before we went out. Just play at a tempo, do what we know we can do, get in against them, don't let them play and usually our football should take care of itself, and that is what it did today.

" I think that everybody knows the passion of Greg and Dennis Booth, when you see them on the sideline there they kick every ball. I am sure that they still think that they can play but looking at the size of the pair of them I think we know that they can't. They are good value though, they get us going, they got us up for the game today and I think that we went out there from the first minute to the last, albeit the disappointment of their goal. We thoroughly deserved the win though and I think that we could have won by a lot more.

" We were more than happy with the way that we were playing the game before we scored. The longer the game goes on though, we would be liars if we thought that we didn't need a goal here while we were on top. Thankfully it came and I think that the big goal was the one just before half-time, we were going to be going in lifted as it was but to nick that goal in injury time of the first-half was massive. "

" To be fair we came out in the second-half, we knew that they would have a bit of a rollocking, and in the second-half we came out and probably started better than we did in the first-half. Then we managed to nick the third, albeit the goal that they got was disappointing, it took a deflection off Kav (Graham Kavanagh) and it has gone on, but that is the only downside to a fantastic day all round.

" I think that if could put your finger on what went wrong, I don't know, we are all football managers, we all look at games and we all think that we know the reasons why. All we can do though, and what Greg has done, is go back to basics. We are training at a fantastic tempo, we are training how we want to play, and we have come out there and I think that we have proved that today.

" Right from the first minute we have got at them, not allowed them to play, got in their faces and won the ball high up the pitch. Then I think that you saw, I don't know how many crosses we have had in today, but I bet that it is a hell of a lot flashing across the goal, we should have had a lot more goals like I said.

" I think that I have to take it nice and easy now ahead of Tuesday and see how it goes. I think that everybody is on a high at the minute but when you wake up in the morning then it could be a different matter. You could play again, probably poorly, but you could play again.

" I need to just enjoy the night, enjoy the win, we come in on Monday and look at it from there, I am sure that Greg will pick a team that he thinks can beat Grays. Thanks to everyone today, thanks to the fans, thanks to the staff, thanks to the players, and let's all keep this thing going forward. "
