Blues skipper Paul Thirlwell
United captain Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening ahead of tomorrow's League One match against Scunthorpe at Brunton Park, Thirlwell hoping for some more consistency in Carlisle's performances :

" The mood is still remaining positive, it has to, obviously we are struggling to find that consistency we need and we have done throughout the season. We feel like we are not playing too badly though, the other night, granted after another fantastic start to the game in which we could have had three goals in the first 20 minutes.

" Once they got their first goal for the remaining hour we were poor, I think the players have to accept that we didn't play anywhere near the standards that we have done. We put that one to bed though and we move on to tomorrow, we have got another game coming up sharpish and hopefully get three points tomorrow.

" Last season you could probably say that what didn't get us up in the top two was our away form, and yet the last few games away, or as long as I can remember, we have been producing. So it is a tough one to call, obviously the longer that you go without getting a win, then if you have a stretch of games at home then it does get probably frustrating more than anything else.

" It's not like we were playing poorly throughout the 90 minutes, I think that in the last five or six games we have come out of the traps like a house on fire and we just haven't been able to capitalise on the chances that we have created. If we can do that then I am sure that we are going to give a team sooner or later a bit of a spanking. It is all well enough to say that though, we have to go out there and do it. "

" We have to attack the Scunthorpe game in the manner in which we attacked it down there when we played them away. We got out of the traps again and we dominated the game for 90 minutes, although everyone will say look at the result and we did eventually lose the game. If we just carry on our form the most part in playing the way in which we are playing then I think that we can go out there and get a positive result tomorrow. "

" I think that 50 points is the benchmark usually for safety but I think that we are just looking at maintaining the level of performance that we know we are capable of. If we can produce that then we know that with the chances we are creating we are going to win more games than we are going to lose. We have to go out there and do that though, and hopefully when we are putting teams under pressure, capitalise on it and not give sloppy goals away at the other end.

" He (Greg Abbott) tries to take all the pressure off the players. We will go in again tomorrow and he will say that it is about us, he will tell us obviously that we know that we are a good side and that we have to go out there and show that we are a good side.

" For the majority of the season I think that we have produced performances in a game but we haven't managed to string 90 minutes together at various points. That inconsistency has cost us a bit but we have got ten massive games to go and let's be positive and get a few wins early doors and get us well away from where we don't want to be. "

" I think that he said after Tuesday night, he came out and said that he will obviously have to take responsibility for the results and I am sure that he will take that on the chin. I think that as players though we have to take the blame for that performance, we didn't produce to the standards that we know we can do.

" That is disappointing and after the game we were all distraught as well as fans and everyone else alike involved with the club. We put that to bed though, we put that to bed like we put the Crewe win to bed, we have got another massive game tomorrow and we are looking to go out and win it.

" You will certainly see a Carlisle side tomorrow that is full of energy and full of endeavour and we want to go out there and do well. We will be doing our utmost to do that and just hope that three points can be on the end of it. We know that we are creating chances and it is just a case of putting them away, and if we do then we are going to go out there and win more games than we are going to lose.

" I am hanging in there myself, the games are coming a bit too thick and fast. We are coming out of a tough period, I think that we have had seven games in about 21 days after tomorrow. So it has been tough but I am feeling good, the rest of the lads are feeling good. We just want to be positive as players, positive as a staff and we want the fans obviously, who we know will be there tomorrow, to be positive as well. Let's all stick in it together and I am sure that we will get the wins that we are capable of getting. "
