Blues skipper Paul Thirlwell
United skipper Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria this evening about the signing today of Preston left-winger Lewis Neal, Thirlwell also looking back on Carlisle's 2-2 draw at Hartlepool on Tuesday night :

" He (Lewis Neal) is good, I remember him, he was at Stoke previous to Preston I think and then obviously moved onto Preston. Good Championship pedigree, I have just heard the news myself and I am looking forward to playing with him. I think that someone for the left is something that the gaffer (Greg Abbott) will have his insight into the signing.

" Cleveland (Taylor) has gone on to the left-hand side though and he has obviously done a good job for us. Obviously Jeff (Smith) was in good form before he got the injury and then Lewis coming in so things are looking positive and we have got options all over the park now. I am sure that we will be getting him up singing a song or saying a few words and we will see what he is all about, we will see if his voice is up to scratch and crack on from there.

" I think that new players coming in is just the nature of the game, we have all been there when you are a player in the squad and you have been there for a while and then when you are a new player coming in. It is going to happen, managers all over the country, it is their job to try to strengthen whenever they can and obviously Lewis coming in is going to make us a stronger squad.

" We were disappointed at Hartlepool, in the first-half we played ever so well and rightly so we were two up. I think that you have to give Hartlepool some credit though in the second-half, they could have wilted but they did come out and roll their sleeves up. To be fair they just put a lot of balls into our box and we just couldn't seem to get out.

" Either they would get a corner, we would get it cleared, Richie Humphreys had a great long throw that was as good as a corner and everything we seemed to clear kept coming back. We thought that we were going to hold on, with them getting the goal on the hour it obviously gave them half an hour to get back into the game.

" Albeit they got one in the 85th minute and we just couldn't hold on but overall after the disappointment of the second-half against Tranmere it was a fantastic reaction from the lads. It was a good point, albeit away from home, unfortunately the fact that we were 2-0 up adds to a little bit of disappointment but I think that it was a good point overall.

" For the second goal, Peter Murphy, it was a good corner from Graham Kavanagh, I was right behind it and Murph has got a great header on it but to be fair it has taken another touch before it has gone in the back of the net. So who it was off I am not really sure but the way that Cleveland was reacting would suggest that, he is the one really trying to claim it so I think that it definitely got a nick on the way but who would care less. It was just nice to be two goals up at the time, I have gone with Cleveland but I am going to get more goals than Murph this season anyway. "

" What you want to do and what the gaffer will want to do along with the staff, they will want to strengthen. If you want to strengthen then you want to have players who obviously, you might spot a young player lower down in the leagues who is up and coming and take a chance. In this case though we have gone for pedigree and we know what he is all about. We know that he has played at a higher level, produced at a higher level and we are pleased to have him and hopefully he will take his Championship form into Carlisle and League One.

" I think that to be fair you are seeing a totally different side now as to what went down to Colchester. We have massively improved in recent weeks, we are a much stronger test and we are hoping to prove that tomorrow. There is a little bit in the fact that we lost 5-0 down there but you lose games throughout the season. It is just about us getting back on track with our solid home form and picking up three points tomorrow, and then hopefully doing the same again on Tuesday.

" I have seen him (Michael Burns) in training and you can see that he has got qualities. He has been at Premier League clubs and come through those clubs and played with some fantastic players. By all accounts the games that he has played in in the reserves he has shown what he is capable of, so I am sure that he will be chomping at the bit as well as Lewis who has come in today.

" So the squad is looking healthy, if we can keep everyone off the treatment table, I don't think that Jeff (Smith) is too far away then the gaffer is going to have some major headaches at times. Like all managers though, that is what he will want and everyone who has got the shirt knows that they have to play well to keep it. I am alright at the moment, I am hanging in there, I am doing alright, touch wood I feel really good at the minute so long may that continue. "
