Blues midfielder Paul Thirlwell
United skipper Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening ahead of the match at Crewe tomorrow, Thirlwell talking about the need to improve Carlisle's desperate away form :

" I'm a bit tired, more so yesterday than today so it was just nice to get another 90 minutes under my belt and that's two in a week with the reserves. No problems touch wood so far so I've just got to come through it. It's been especially tedious coming back this year because, obviously since the first five games I've played at the start of the season, it's never really got going for me.

" It's been very stop-start, when I feel like I have been getting somewhere towards having a few games obviously I've had more problems. Just fingers crossed now that I can do everything right and get obviously from now until the end of the season fully fit.

" It's frustrating, thankfully this year we've been quite lucky in terms of injuries, we haven't had too many. From my point of view it was boring because there was only me ever in the gym it seemed at one point, but obviously you don't want anyone else in there with you because that is bad for the squad. It's been hard mentally and physically but thankfully I'm coming out of the other end now and hopefully I can stay fit from now until the end of the season.

" It's been basically calf problems, not even one calf, I pulled the initial one at Swansea which was just a standard injury really, it's usually two to three weeks. I came back from that one after the three weeks and was due to play I think in the Chester game. Then unfortunately on Monday in the training I got a problem in the other one which turned out to be worse and that kept me out for another four weeks.

" By the time I eventually got back, I've been training for a couple of weeks, I think I'd been back six weeks at the time when it came back to the Port Vale game. Whilst I hadn't many games I felt like I was getting there and then in the first-half against Port Vale it's gone again. So I managed to struggle on to half-time only to try to see if it would ease off at half-time but unfortunately it didn't and here I am on the next comeback trail. "

" We've just arrived here, a couple of the lads, I came down with Bridgey (Marc Bridge-Wilkinson) but the bus is here, it's just pulling up now. It's probably good to talk now before Arni (Paul Arnison) comes in shouting and bawling but we're arriving now.

" The reserves at Morecambe wasn't the result we were after, it was one of those games that never really got started for us as a team. When you chop and change the team around so much I think it is sometimes hard to get a continuity going and whilst we played really well the week before we didn't do so well on Wednesday. It's another 90 minutes for everybody though and it can only be good for the squad.

" I don't think you can warm up any different for an away match, but then it just puts more emphasis on the fact that we're not getting results away from home. I think we just have to go about it like we do home games, granted tactically there might be the odd change here and there but I think we just have to remain positive. The away form isn't what anybody wants, fans, players and everyone but as long as we keep doing the things that we have done all season, we just feel that it has got to turn for us.

" The Nottingham Forest and Doncaster games are massive, obviously the home form speaks for itself this year, it's been outstanding, it's got to be up there as one of the best in the country and not just our league. We just feel like when we go out at home, even if we go a goal behind we have that endeavour and confidence that we are always going to win games.

" Maybe away from home if we go one behind we haven't got maybe the same confidence. I think it's more important just to get off to a good start tomorrow. To get to 20-25 minutes and be 1-0 up would be great but we don't want to be conceding early goals away from home when you are in a bit of a bad spell.

" I like to think that hopefully I'm in with a shout tomorrow but the gaffer can go one of a few ways really. He's got me, Jeff (Smith), Grant (Smith) so hopefully I can get a game but we'll just have to wait and see, you can't give these teams out as you never know how is listening. His (Chris Lumsdon's) music will be missing tomorrow, his music overpowers everything else, it's all this 90's pop he listens to. "
