New United skipper Paul Thirlwell spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday as he talked about a new League One season looming for the Blues:

" We're really looking forward to it, I think when Monday came around it was a good time, everyone was looking forward to this week and preparing for the Walsall game, really looking forward to it. Pre-season is good, it's always good to come back and get back out on the pitch but that's the place where we are getting fit and that's where we want to make our mistakes. Obviously we are going to make them in the season as well but we've got to get the legs going again.

" I feel we've done that in the games that we have played and I think we're looking good for the start of the season. We're the same as the fans, when we're on holiday we're the same as everyone else when the fixtures come out, that is the first thing you look at. Then it's just a case of coming back and, to be honest, personally I think pre-season tends to drag a bit because once you get back you just want the season to start. Thankfully that is going to be this week and we're looking forward to it.

" The gaffer (Neil McDonald) has strengthened the squad and we look good in all departments. I'm sure he is probably still looking for a few more if he can, the same as all managers, but the bigger and better the squad is the better it is for the club. Everyone came back in good condition at the start of pre-season, and everyone has worked their socks off to get where they want to be on the teamsheet. That's the gaffer's job to pick the team and I'm sure the more sort of dilemmas he has in doing it the happier he will be.

" I don't mind what system we play, I think that in this day and age you have to be able to adapt, even during games. So I think the more formations we know, and the more formations we can play well in, the better a side we are going to be. We've tried a few different ones and obviously we've got the 4-3-3 that we had last year as well. I'm sure we might go horses for courses, I don't know, sometimes we might play different formations, that's something the manager will answer. I think we've looked good so far and we'll hopefully look good on Saturday.

" We just want the same again from the supporters please, it was fantastic last year, especially away from home. When we get the big games and the big nights, especially a night game I think is always special at Brunton Park, like the Nottingham Forest game we had and things like that. Just the same again please and hopefully we can give them lots to cheer about. "
