Colchester boss Paul Lambert spoke to BBC Radio Essex after his side's emphatic 5-0 thrashing of Carlisle today, Lambert suggesting that it was a great team effort all round :

" It was a performance that was massive, the lads in the three games in which I have been involved have been terrific, no doubt. A bit of luck and we might have got something from Millwall but the players and the fans have been honest and that is really, really pleasing.

" I can't influence what happened in previous times under the last manager or whatever the case may be. I can't do anything about it but I came in at a time when the club was at a little bit of a low ebb. At this minute the lads have responded to what we have asked them to do, which was always in them, it was always in them. It happens a lot when a new manager comes in, you get a little bit of a lift but the lads have been a credit to themselves.

" We scored really, really early but sometimes that gives you a little bit of cause for concern because when you score too early you might think that they are going to hang on. The way things have gone of late at home, even though they were 2-0 up at Oldham, they came back and surrendered the lead. This time though it was big, big performances.

" He has got ability in abundance, he can go by people for fun. Once he starts to obviously get an end product to his game then he will be worth his weight in gold. Honestly though, I thought Dean Hammond was colossal, (Chris) Coyne coming back in from an international was massive for us, along with (Pat) Baldwin, then (Dean) Gerken with the save at 3-0. "

" He (Dean Hammond) was driving on and driving the middle of the park, (Kemal) Izzet has come in and been terrific as well, and (David) Perkins has been great. I can go through every one of them though, they have been a credit to the football club.

" I think that he (Akanni Sunday-Wasiu) is uncoachable, no doubt about it, you can tell him one thing and it will be totally the reverse that you get. He is a bit of a handful though and his goal, a terrific goal, that is what you get with Sunday, the unpredictability. I think that makes him very unpredictable for opposition defences, when you saw him when he was through and he missed it. He seems to get chances falling at him though and he can finish, I saw him in the reserve game the other week, he was unplayable and then his goal today was terrific.

" I don't think that you can play when there is no pressure on the ball, you can't play without it so you may as well go and get it. I think that when you do it and you go and press the game then you have got a chance, because your good players will get you a goal. I just think though that the tempo of the game before I came in certainly wasn't there.

" It will be a really, really tough game at Northampton on Tuesday, but listen, the confidence at this football club is sky high, and that is the way that you want to try to keep it. Every game is not going to be like that but we are certainly playing well enough to go there and win.

" We can't keep him (Steven Gillespie) fit at the minute, he trained yesterday for a short spell and did fine so we thought that we would go with him again. He's obviously been taken off again though so we'll just have to assess how he is on Monday. I think that his hamstring, I don't know what has happened in previous times, or how many games he has played since he has been here, but we have got to get him fit to keep him on the football pitch, first and foremost. We just have to get him going. "
