U's boss Paul Lambert
Colchester manager Paul Lambert spoke to BBC Radio Essex about his side's 2-0 victory against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Lambert pleased with the recent improvement the U's have shown defensively :

" Another away game and another win and it was thoroughly deserved. I think that Lewis Gobern got a terrific cross into the box for the own goal, it was a really hard one to defend because he is facing his own goal and he doesn't know what is around or about him. Fortunately for us he made a mistake but the quality of the cross was terrific.

" I thought that our lads were terrific today, I thought that they got at them right from the kick-off, not an easy place to come and it was a terrific result for us. The one chance they had, Marc Tierney, that was just an absolutely phenomenal clearance, terrific defending. Marc Tierney, there is no doubt about it has been absolutely colossal since he has come here. Then Jimmy (Walker) makes an absolutely brilliant save from the resulting corner, so you are talking about lads defending with their lives, it certainly was the case.

" We never really looked like losing a goal other than the long throw-in they tried and a couple of corners. Other than that though the defence was (Pat) Baldwin and (Paul) Reid, along with (Alan) Maybury and Tierney and Walker at the minute are absolutely vital for us. They are performing really, really well for us.

" I think that the results are showing what the settled defence is doing for us to be perfectly honest. The lads have done it themselves though, Alan Maybury came in at a time when I thought that we needed a bit of experience and I think that Maybury is as consistent as the day is long, absolutely brilliant. Tierney I think will get better and better as his career unfolds, Baldwin and Reid are defending the way that I want to defend. Jimmy has come in and I liken Jimmy with Andy Goram, that is the highest compliment that I can give him. "

" The second goal was brilliant football, come down the wing then switch it over to the other. Honestly I am absolutely delighted with the way that the lads played, I thought that we thoroughly deserved to win. I thought that Lewis was great for the hour that he was on, he has not played many games and all those sorts of things so we have got to nurture him along. I think that you could see today though that he was certainly a thorn in their side the whole afternoon.

" I just thought that Yeatesy (Mark Yeates) getting in behind Scott (Vernon) and that Lewis with his pace would cause them trouble. I am not going to criticise Mark Yeates for trying to make things happen in the last third of the football pitch. I always say that to them, take the risk and if you are willing to take the risk then great. You are more worried if they don't and in the last third of the football pitch they were great.

" In a busy run of fixtures it is easy for me to say to bring them on but the lads have got to recover as well. It is a big, big ask, we have played numerous games, I feel as those I have been here for eight years let alone anything else. So the games just keep coming and coming and coming but the lads have certainly been brilliant for me.

" We will try to bring some players in but as I said before I am not going to bring them in just for the sake of it for filling up another space in the dressing-room, without somebody coming in who I think might add something to the team. Simon (Hackney) has come in, Jimmy has come in and Mark has come in since I have been here, and Alan Maybury has come in.

" The pleasing thing is that the current set of lads have all stepped up to it which is great. I am not going to just for the sake of it waste the chairman's money, let alone anything else. The run that the players are on now has raised the level and it is phenomenal. The way that they are playing the game is terrific, coming away from home and virtually dominating the game is really pleasing, so I can't ask for any more from my group of lads. "
