Blues manager Neil McDonald
United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his opinion on the 3-1 defeat at Swindon in the FA Cup, McDonald talking about the need to start performing better away from home :

" We didn't perform and we didn't give ourselves a chance to progress and that is the most disappointing thing, we are out of the FA Cup and I was just very, very disappointed with the performance. I wouldn't say that we are pressing the self-destruct button, when you make mistakes you get punished and it's as simple as that, we certainly don't make the mistakes on purpose that's for sure.

" We scored an own goal, they had one shot with the goal, Keiren (Westwood) has saved one just after the second goal and then they scored the third one right on full-time so they have only really had three chances. I wish we could have three chances and stick them in the back of the net though. We sat down in the changing room and I think we are all disappointed individually, we lost the individual battle and we certainly lost the team battle that's for sure.

" That is the most disappointing thing, it just seems to be happening away from home, we seem to be fantastic at home. We just had a little conversation, it is doom and gloom I suppose because we are out of the FA Cup and it's another away defeat. We are trying always to try and put it right, I've changed the formation, we're down on personnel with a couple of injuries and stuff like that which we can cry off with but at the end of the day Swindon were better than us.

" He (Simon Hackney) has got a verruca with a blister on it and he can't even put his foot down so he had absolutely no chance. David Raven's groin has come on again so we're going to have sort that out, it's a little bit of a worry as it seems to be ongoing all the time. Other players have to stand up and be counted though and we didn't have too many of them today.

" It is a long travel but that is down to our location, we just don't seem to perform away from home. Early on in the season at Yeovil we played really well, at Oldham we dominated them and probably should have won the game, and we probably could have won at Forest and Bradford. Chesterfield is probably the best defensive display away from home so we aren't too far away from being a decent team away from home, but sometimes we are just a little bit too nice and we give away easy goals.

" Against Chesterfield and Forest and a couple of other teams away from home we have defended with our lives, really we're not defending with our lives at the minute and that is a huge concern away from home, because they are defending with their lives at home. We have to put it right and start that at Bournemouth, the players know their responsibilities, they are trying hard but it's just not working for them at the moment. I'm sure that it will turn and we have to believe that it will turn, because if we don't then we may as well pack in.

" The thing that is most concerning me is that the performances have been disappointing, leading up to the last two away games the performances had been decent. We've given away a couple of sloppy goals and stuff like that but we haven't been so much outplayed, the performances haven't been up to the standard that we set ourselves. Behind the scenes all we can do is try and work hard on the training field, we've got the perfect information on all the tactical stuff, I'm almost 100% certain that we're not being done tactically.

" It's as individuals, as well as units and as well teams that we have to perform better, this is the first time this season that I can't protect the players because they didn't perform today. There is still a lot to play for though, we've only got one thing to play for and that is the league. The pressure is going to be on ourselves though because we have put it on ourselves by not winning away from home, the quicker we can do that the better.

" We're still working very, very hard, the players are trying their best, it might be the fact that we might just not be good enough sometimes, on some Saturdays we might just not be good enough. We have to keep on striving and keep on working hard to turn that corner, the sooner it comes then I suppose it takes the pressure off everybody. "
