United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Friday evening as he gave his thoughts on new £60,000 signing Jeff Smith and United's match at Brentford tomorrow :

" He (Jeff Smith) has come and joined Carlisle to try and help us up the league and try to get promotion either through the play-offs or automatic. For me the club have been fantastic, we've signed Paul Thirlwell from Derby, there wasn't a fee involved in that but we've signed a top-class player. We've got players coming in on loan, OK it's on loan, young and old, for the club to put the money upfront to pay for this player is really outstanding and excellent on their part. It's also fantastic for me because it's the left-sided player that I've been looking for and it adds extra competition for places in the squad which has done fantastically well so far.

" We've been trying to chase him for three weeks and it's been frustrating in a way that I couldn't tell anybody but negotiations do take a long time. We've agreed everything and he's really happy to be here. We want to put a smile on the supporters faces who travel left, right and centre all over the country and these are the games that we should be winning because they are below us. We want the teams to stay below us and to do that we have to pick up points. We need to keep on winning our home games if we possibly can, we've worked hard again this week in training. Everybody is still bouyant and full of confidence and we're really looking forward to Saturday again. "
