United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening as he gave his thoughts on the game at Crewe Alexandra tomorrow. McDonald commenting about the struggle to bring in some new players and the injury to Paul Murray :

" We've been training at Bolton today, we try and mix it up when we are travelling away to save all the lads having to come up to Carlisle and all the way back again, we've trained at their training ground and we've had a good day. We haven't really exceeded my expectations, we could go top tomorrow but that depends on other people's results, we've given ourselves a shout and that is the main thing. David Raven is definitely out tomorrow, he hasn't travelled, he's almost fully fit again but he just needed to have a week's rest and a week's treatment and he should come into training next week hopefully. There might be some tweaking to the team tomorrow, but then again there might not.

" Obviously when they go across that white line we can't do much, we can only pull and push them, they have taken responsibility for themselves though. They are in a mood at the moment that is very confident, they feel as though they are unbeatable at the moment and we've just to go and try and keep that going as long as we possibly can. It is a big blow, he (Paul Murray) is really our attacking midfield player – driving inside the box. At the same time though he didn't play the other night and we won 2-0, we have other people to come into the dynamics and the system who know the system well enough now though. Yes he's a big miss but at the same time it give somebody else a chance which they've already taken really.

" It's certainly not easy to try and bring somebody in, being honest I'm trying to look at the Championship and the Premiership, whether it be players who are on the fringe or young players, that is what I'm looking for. We're still scouting down below as well to try and get somebody with a little bit of promise, sometimes that is quite difficult I suppose on both counts but we'll keep on trying.

" We've got Paul Thirlwell in and as I said when he came in – hopefully he won't be the last, it does take time but we're still cracking on. Signing him permanently all depends on how he sees things, he seems to be enjoying playing at the moment which he wasn't at Derby, he seems to enjoy the system that we are playing, he's involved heavily and we'll just see how it goes. I think we'll get an idea if he says that he would like to stop, he's under contract with Derby though and we'd have to have discussions with Derby. We'll get an indication later on though of whether Paul wants to go and if he is still enjoying himself and still in the team. With the 93-day loan rule now and the January window that takes us right to the end of the year now, so we're working a little bit extra harder knowing that they're not going to go back and leave us short with two weeks to go.

" It was very important that when I first came to the club that I was quite impressed with Danny Kirkup, he needs a little bit of experience and this (Southport) is the first club that has come in and asked for him. It's at a level that I think he can cope with, their first two games are Exeter and Oxford so that is fantastic for him, Paul Cook is short on defenders so why not send him out and say welcome to the real world to a certain extent. I think that it is Glenn Murray's last game (on loan at Stockport) on Saturday and he will probably be back with us on Monday. "
