John Sheridan
Latics manager John Sheridan, who was speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, talked about the match against United today. Sheridan complaining bitterly about a penalty given and one not given :

" I don't think we deserved to lose, I think our second-half performance deserved to get something out of the game. I think we created chances and took the game to them, I thought we dominated the second-half to be fair. Obviously I thought the first-half was a poor game for me, there wasn't a lot going on and unfortunately we gave a soft penalty away.

" I thought ours was a definite penalty, everyone else thought it was a definite penalty but, other than the referee, I don't understand him. In a way he is looking at his linesman who is 70 yards away and he is 15 yards away, and he can see it clearly, it's a penalty. I can't get involved with referees but the other official just said that he had the same view as us so he knows where we are coming from.

" I'm best just keeping my mouth shut but it was a blatant penalty, we created enough chances and we should have got something out of it. Even though saying that, we are very naïve sometimes in the things we do on the pitch. Stupid things, I can't believe what some of them are seeing or what they are thinking of when, the only chances they have got in the second-half are through us being very naïve.

" Possibly they could have scored one or two but I was happy with the way we played, I thought we played very well in the second-half. I want tempo and I want us to pass it and we did it in the second-half, it's no good, you can't just stroll around, you've got to work hard to break teams down. I thought that in the second-half, possibly because we were 1-0 down, I think we took the game to them and I was pleased.

" Again though there are a lot of things that I think we can improve and I'm going to definitely get it through to them what I want from them. I'm pleased with the second-half though, in the first-half both teams, well I don't think it was a game really. There wasn't a lot going on, there was no quality anywhere but I'm pleased with the second-half.

" We tell them what to wear on their feet, it's just whether they have got balance or not. There was a lot of people slipping, I think it was a lovely pitch but it's one of those days isn't it, a bit of rain on top, there were a few players on both sides slipping so it's just one of those things. Whether they've got the right footwear, I think we did have the right footwear but it was just the pitch being a slippy pitch.

" It's important than we get back to winning, I definitely think that we could easily have got a draw today, or possibly go on to win it. Craig (Davies) has had a chance, Rico (Michael Ricketts) has had a chance and a definite penalty. So I'll take a few positives out of the second-half but we've got to be stronger as a team. I want leaders on the pitch because I hate losing.

" I want leaders on the pitch and I need to get it through to them that I want people, three, four or five leaders on the pitch taking control of things. I don't think we need another defender in, I wasn't happy with the goal. I thought Thommo (John Thompson) could have done a lot better with it but it was a very soft penalty. We didn't close the initial first ball and it happened two or three times just before the penalty incident so we've got to work harder to stop things happening. "
