"Bridgey"
January League Two player of the month Michael Bridges spoke exclusively to BBC Radio Cumbria yesterday evening as he gave his thoughts on the Chester victory. The ex-Leeds player also spoke about a hard week of training and a tough game to come against Leyton Orient in seven days time :

" I’m delighted, we knew what we had to go and out and do after the performance last weekend. We had a terrible result but we’ve bounced back in the best possible way. All week we have worked on closing down, the gaffer has had us running all over Carlisle, it’s been a physical week, so the lads knew we had to go out and get a result otherwise we’d be doing exactly the same next week and we didn’t fancy that.

" I played in a different position today, the gaffer has played me in behind the front two, kind of in a triangle and I’ve played there before. Everything was just dropping to me and I was just shooting from all angles, the fans were getting behind us, the lads were closing down and thankfully we got the breakthrough early doors with Adam Murray. Whether it was over the line or not we don’t care but the linesman flagged and from then on we were just untouchable.

" I thoroughly enjoyed my goal, it was strange actually, everything just seemed to open up. I took a touch about 10 yards outside the box, I ran it at them and it seemed to open up. Karl Hawley made a good run, I chucked in a dummy, the two defenders sold for it and I’ve hit it on my left-foot and it’s gone in the back of the net. Even Michael Branch, one of their players, was giving me a round of applause as I was running back, he’s one of my old colleagues. It was nice and it was a massive lift off our shoulders once it was 2-0 at half-time.

" Keiren Westwood’s penalty save was massive, it changes the whole game. He saved it and it was still 2-0, even that was a big boost for us because when they missed that penalty you could see their heads went. We knew we could capitalise then and it was attack after attack and thankfully the referee gave us a penalty back, it took about four opportunities though I think. The lad handballed one of mine, Karl has been mugged in the box two or three times and finally he got one so it was tremendous.

" It’s not so much pressure being top of the league, we could have gone top a few weeks ago and we’ve slipped up on many occasions, this time we haven’t slipped up, we’ve gone and destroyed Chester. We’ve gone top and now they’ve got to go and catch us and we’ve got to go a perform and try and get a lead on those top three. I’m looking forward to the Leyton Orient game next week, they got beat again today, it’s a big one though and we’re up for it and we’ve bounced back in the best possible way today. "
