Mark Beck Talks About The Game

Last updated : 02 December 2012 By Thetashkentterror

United striker Mark Beck (MB) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 3-1 FA Cup second round defeat at home to Bournemouth, Beck pleased with his goal but disappointed with the result:

JP

Another goal for you, a good news/bad news day in a way because goalscorers like to score, but I am sure you would have all liked to make it through to the third round of the cup?

MB

Yeah, obviously it is good to score but the result comes first, so disappointed. At 2-1 I thought maybe we might push on from there, but it wasn’t to be an unfortunately we are out.

JP

What was it like out there? Greg Abbott was talking about in his post-match there that they are just a better team, and you have got to get so much right to beat teams like that, it must have been hard work for you all out there?

MB

Yeah, I mean obviously Bournemouth are up there in the league aren’t they. They are quite a good team but I don’t know, I think we just got out-worked today. I don’t know if they were better than us but I think we just got out-worked to be honest.

JP

I think in a way the fans would rather hear that they were just better than that you got out-worked, how is it that that can happen then?

MB

I don’t know, I honestly don’t know, it is just one of those days I think to be honest.

JP

A tricky one for you answer isn’t it that. How much of a baptism of fire has it been coming into the team line-up like this, I mean it would have been lovely to come in last season probably when they were pushing for the play-offs and in all the competitions, it is a real slog for young lads trying to settle into this?

MB

Oh yeah, we are down there now in the deep end and hopefully we will just learn from this, and hopefully we can dig ourselves out and I think we will to be honest.

JP

Is it a good experience for you as a young professional to see this side of it first and hopefully earn the glory days?

MB

Yeah, but it is like hard at the same time because obviously we are not flying at the minute, but we have just got to dig deep like I say and see what happens.

JP

You kept working away and gave everyone hope towards the end with your goal, talk us through it?

MB

I was just gambling at the back-post and I think Mikey (Mike Edwards) has gone up and challenged the keeper (Shwan Jalal)  and hasn’t got the cleanest connection on it and it just fell to me at the back-post and I have managed to just reach up and nod it in.

JP

Still a bit of work to do, I thought the defender was going to boot you in the face actually?

MB

Yeah, I was just backpedalling, but I just stuck my neck on it and it went in thankfully.

JP

You say gambled, that is an important attribute for a striker isn’t it, because so often strikers just aren’t there when the ball falls?

MB

Yeah, that is the thing, I mean the one at Yeovil last week  I was gambling again, and you have just got to take a chance really.

JP

Feel you should have got another one maybe today?

MB

I am not sure, I think that was my only effort on goal to be honest, oh no, I had the other one. It was a decent save from the lad to be fair, I just played a one-two……….

JP

You caught it well enough?

MB

Yeah, I know, I just tried to shape it in the far corner but he got there unfortunately.

JP

What was the mood in the changing room like after this one, because it was another game where the display was almost there, perhaps the opposition just had a bit more on the day as opposed to you were just turned over?

MB

Yeah, they are a bit down the lads because obviously we don’t like getting beat. But, that dressing room, we know we have got the quality to get out of this rough patch we are in, so everyone has just got to dig deep on Monday morning.

JP

Is it that resilience and determination, because it is another  tough game coming up back here this time next week?

MB

Yeah, Sheffield United, yeah, we have just got to dig even deeper against Sheffield United, I mean they are up there as well, but hopefully we can turn things around.
