Workington centre-half Kevin Gray spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Tuesday evening about how his career has gone since leaving Carlisle, Gray also chatting about the whereabouts of his steam engines :

" I've got to have an operation on my leg, it's just a bit of a torn cartilage, which I did in a pre-season game. Which was a bit of a blow really but these things happen, it will get sorted soon I hope. It's keyhole surgery and they don't open you up that much, I think it's just a little scope that they use and manage to do everything through that, so it's quite remarkable really.

" I'd actually spoken to Darren (Edmondson) midway through, or towards the end of last season regarding what was going to be happening. Obviously I didn't know myself at the time what was happening at Chesterfield but he made an offer open to me which was grand. It obviously meant that I could stay up in the area and still carry on playing.

" It's been up and down since I left Carlisle, I went down to Chesterfield and had a season down there. I started off playing and then I got a little bit of an injury, then I got back in the side, and then unfortunately just before Christmas I got sent off and that was it really. They went on a good run and the lads who were playing in the side did OK and it just stayed like that. I was in and out really until the end of the season.

" I wouldn't mind getting into coaching, I missed out doing one of the badges because the course was full during the summer unfortunately. So I'm looking to get on that again and then hopefully get back into doing a bit of coaching. Obviously if Darren and Viv (Busby) want my advice or help or whatever during the course of the season then I will happily give it. "

" Those two seem to know though, well they do know what they are doing. They have got sessions planned and they have got how they want the lads to play and no doubt they will have gameplans in mind. So they very much know what is what. I was bit gutted about not being involved last night but it was just one of those things.

" I don't know if I can help them bring players in, obviously if Darren is interested in players and I know them then I can always speak to them about what they are like, what the lads are like, and what the players are like. It may help, but it is a long way out for people, probably not from the area or don't live nearby, to come and travel up.

" I don't know when I will be fit, if I can get the operation sorted out as soon as possible then it is generally only three four to weeks getting back to strengthening the muscles up and getting back to a bit of fitness again. Then obviously though there is a lack of game play during pre-season which is a big thing because I got injured in the second game of pre-season. So I could do with a few good training sessions first.

" My steam engines have stayed put, they stay where they are based at the moment because obviously I knew that I wouldn't be moving from the area, it's something that keeps me of trouble. I doubt that I'll be taking them down to Borough Park, I doubt it very much, it will take me too long to get there. "
