John Ward
United manager John Ward spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey after Carlisle's 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe this afternoon, Ward suggesting that his players need to take their chances when they are on top in a game :

" It is hard to take, I wasn't sure what to say to the players at full-time there. Because I have got the same emotions as them, I have got disappointment, I am pleased with a lot of things and I have got annoyance with some things. So I have said that I will leave it until Monday before I dissect it. What I do know though is that I have got a really good team who have played some really good football today and have got beat.

" We won't get too many pats on the back for playing well and getting beat but I think that we should today because we have contributed a great deal to a very good game of football. While we are in that business at times to entertain people, and we have tried to do that, even away at a good side like Scunthorpe United. We want to win but when we are not winning then we have got to at least lose like that, going forward and being positive.

" When you are on top in any game then you have got to take your chances. We had a really good spell probably for about 25 minutes going up to half-time, we have had three or four really good opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. With Joe Murphy's goalkeeping skills and we've missed with ones where we should have done better once or twice, then I think that the mix of that has kept it at 0-0.

" Then you are concerned a little bit because that gives Scunthorpe time to regroup and come back at you, and they have done that. At the end of the game the reason that we have lost is that they have scored twice and we scored once, and both teams had good chances to have more goals than that. "

" You can say anything you like about the game but tomorrow morning it will read that we have lost 2-1 and that is the disappointment of it. I know that if we can play that type of football this Saturday against Leeds though then we have got a good chance of winning. That is what we will pushing towards the team, of course there are errors and mistakes and things that you want to eradicate but in the main if we are going to get beat then we will get beat playing like that, because I can handle that. "

" We haven't given up. We have kept going, and not only have we kept going but we played some good football. I have got a good team and I am really proud of them, and we have got to keep working even in defeat and we will. Next week we will bounce back and we will hopefully give our home supporters a game to remember and a win.

" I've been in the game about 85 years now, or it seems like it, and it is never logical, last week maybe wasn't and this week maybe isn't. You keep working at what you think is right though, my players believe in what we are doing, I believe in what we are doing and we will keep trying to do that to the best of our ability, and that is all that I can ever promise people.

" The Carlisle fans come well don't they, they travel well and enjoy their trips out. I think that today they will be like me, they will be disappointed that they haven't seen their team win or draw but they will know that they have got a good team to follow. I have always said that, we just need that to offer to our fans at Carlisle, home and away that we give something to take back.

" Whilst we haven't given them any points we have given them a performance and hopefully, I am sure that they will, they will stick with it because they have seen what I have seen. Danny Graham took a whack on the calf which is why we changed him towards the end, just as well as to get (Scott) Dobie's pace working, and he was involved in the goal. So that was needed but everyone else is OK. "
