Tranmere manager John Barnes spoke to BBC Radio Merseyside after his side's comprehensive 3-0 defeat against Carlisle at Brunton Park on Saturday, Barnes suggesting that the goals Rovers conceded had nothing to do with the first half red card for their right-back Shaleum Logan :

" We don't know what the outcome would have been without the sending-off, but there is no excuse for players for players not performing the way they did but showing the effort and the commitment in the second half.

" Because, first goal - we had enough men in the box, that had nothing to do with ten men. Second goal - bad pass on the edge, we had the ball on the edge of our box, Ian Thomas-Moore passing to Ryan Fraughan gave the ball straight to them, they crossed it and scored, that has got nothing to do with ten men. Third goal - a free header, nothing to do with ten men. Maybe in terms of the way that the game actually went, but in terms of the goals they scored it had nothing to do with ten men.

" I don't know if their first goal was over the by-line, it may have been or it may not have been, if it was then what can we do about it, there is nothing we can do about it. It is no excuse for the way we defended in the second-half, we were second to everything, never got near anyone. It was a bad time to concede but nevertheless I am not going to use it as an excuse.

" Too much is made about the way we want to play and tactics and all that because that has got nothing to do with whether we play long balls or short balls. That has got to do with individuals showing the right desire and the commitment in difficult circumstances when we are down to ten men. To run around and tackle, to show commitment to each other, to show the right attitude to try to get a result in a difficult situation.

" What can we change? And maybe the players know that, we can't bring other players in, we haven't got any money to bring players in so maybe they are comfortable in the fact knowing that they are going to be there or thereabouts because we can't bring people in. As to whether I might have to put some 15 and 16-year olds in to show a bit of spirit and a bit of desire, maybe so. "

" I said to the players in there, we are in this together until I am told otherwise. I am like anybody else and of course when you get bad results you are under pressure. I said to them that if you are waiting for someone else to come in, then someone else may come in and none of you will play. I said to them that I have more belief in you then maybe you have in yourselves or other people show because you are not showing it out there at all.

" So we don't know what is going to happen but we can't change anything because we haven't got any money to change anything. We can't bring other players in, we have got Kithson Bain coming in from Grenada, I don't want to put too much pressure on him, he is coming from Grenada and of course everyone is looking as if he is going to be the saviour. I know he is a good player, he is a strong player, but nevertheless we shouldn't be looking to a player coming from Grenada to improve us.

" Obviously I believe he can but nevertheless players who are here have to show more, they have to show more. I can always understand if players don't play well but they have to show the right desire and they haven't shown it. Maybe against Charlton and Leeds because the confidence was low but there is no reason for them to play like the way they did today.

" We have to lift the confidence and what can we do but keep going. If you could make wholesale change, but that is not an option for us, we can't, we have to work with what we have got and we have to keep going. That is why you have to be careful on how you treat them this week because we really haven't got a choice. I have to said to them that I haven't got a choice, you have to play, so the majority of you are probably going to be playing again next weekend so what are we going to do?

" We just have to show more, you have to want it more individually. Maybe because of this whole thing about the way we are playing, players have been using it as an excuse for non-performances or non-trying, but we can't afford to do that. Every time Ash (Taylor) has played though he has shown the spirit and desire I want in my side. We just need more players to have that attitude on the field."
