Joe Garner - Radio Cumbria Interview

New United loan signing Joe Garner (JG) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Paul Newton (PN) this afternoon, Watford-loanee Garner happy to be back at Brunton Park after four years away:

JG

I was just driving up then and it brought back a few memories driving up here, so I am just really happy to be here really and I just want to play some games.

PN

Yeah, how did you first hear about Carlisle's interest in bringing you back to the club?

JG

I spoke to a few different clubs and when I heard the manager (Greg Abbott) spoke to me and gave me a ring and I was just happy to come back. I know the manager well and I get on with him well and after I spoke to him I thought it was the right place to come to. I have been away quite a while now, I have obviously been at Nottingham and down south in Watford. I don't think it was just the manager, I think I like the place really, I think the fans are really good and the people about the place, that is another thing about why I wanted to come back. It is just a normal place really, a nice place.

I thought at the time last time I was here we had a really good team, I think we were unlucky not to go up the year we got to the play-offs. But, I think all that is in the past now, there is a new team, a new staff here and they have new ideas, and hopefully I am going to be part of that.

PN

Would it be fair to say since you left the club it has been a frustrating time for you in a way, maybe your career hasn't quite kicked on in the way you might have hoped it had?

JG

Yeah, I agree with you there, I think I have been at Nottingham and then the manager (Colin Calderwood) got sacked who took me there after a couple of weeks. Then I had a couple of loans here and there, and then I went to Watford and obviously I am still there now but wanting to go out and play some games.

I think has been a bit frustrating in the last couple of years, I have not played as many games as I would want to, but these things happen. People get brought in, new owners, new managers and they have their own ideas and own players that they want to bring in, and sometimes you have just got to bite your tongue and get on with it.

PN

What is your situation with Watford as things currently stand? Obviously, you are here for 28 days?

JG

The situation there, to be honest I don't really know myself, I don't think many people at Watford even know what is going on there at the minute. I think there are something like 44 players training each day, no-one speaks English really. I don't really know to be honest what is going on there, I am just happy to be here and looking forward to the game tonight.

PN

How much do you know about this Carlisle United squad? I guess there will be one or two familar faces from the last time you were here?

JG

Yeah, I spoke to a few of the lads, I spoke to Thirs (Paul Thirlwell) and he basically just had good things to say about it. He said it is a good squad, a good group of lads and they are all honest and work hard. I think in this league if you are all honest and all work hard for each other you can do very well.

PN

How fit are you feeling at the moment?

JG

I have had a full pre-season, I have played a couple of games, I think I am fit enough to play and looking forward to it. To be honest I don't really know what things are back at Watford, I have been asked to come here and play for a month and that is what I want to do, and I think the future will take care of itself.

PN

It is ironic that if you are involved in tonight's game, things come full circle, it was the injury against Crewe which effectively ended your time with Carlisle United?

JG

Yeah, I don't know what the word is to word it, but I was driving up today and one of the lads said that we were playing against Crewe tonight, and I was just thinking about that it was my last game against Crewe. I don't know what the word is but there is a word out there to describe what it is, but it is different, crazy.

PN

What can you remember about that?

JG

I remember that when we played Crewe away we were playing really well and I was having a good game and that, and then I had a bit of an injury and that was about it really,

PN

So, you might feel as though you have got some unfinished business to take care of tonight?

JG

Yeah, well I think I played half a game against Crewe, so hopefully I might get another half from this game to finish it off.
