James Berrett Talks About The Game

James Berrett
United midfielder James Berrett (JB) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after Carlisle's 0-0 draw at home to Swindon, Berrett saying that the Blues lacked a bit of creativity in the game :

JP

How did you find that one today?

JB

I think it went quite well, I think we battled well and could have maybe created a few more chances. I think we lacked a bit of creativity that we have had in the other games we have had before. But, I think everything else was still there, the determination and the battling, and I think we dominated most of the game really.

JP

Was it the biggest test you have arguably faced, certainly in the league this season, I know obviously Huddersfield came here and beat you, but how did you find that one in terms of a physical battle with a well drilled side?

JB

Yeah, definitely, it was tough, it was hard work out there, I was very tired towards the end, but I think we have done well. If we could just have created a few more chances then we could have won it.

JP

You have slotted very neatly into that midfield and made a place your own, how are you finding life here with Carlisle United?

JB

I am loving it, I am playing so I am enjoying it, it is just nice to be back on the pitch playing competitive football again, so it is good.

JP

I know they have got plenty of money at the Galpharm Stadium, but they must have some pretty talented midfielders if you were I guess surplus to requirements is the term?

JB

Yeah, they have got a great squad, if you look at the players and some of them have played international football, so it was going to be tough there. But, I am very happy that I have made the move up here and I am enjoying it.

JP

And currently looking down the table towards them of course?

JB

Yeah, I have just had a look there and we are second, so it is all good as long as we can keep up there.

JP

What about Francois Zoko? How has he started to fit in? Has he started to pick up more of what his team-mates do and understand the language and you understand a bit more of what he does?

JB

Yeah, when he first came it was quite tough to say what you wanted him to do or to listen to him. But, now he has picked it up very quickly, I think everyone is just reading a bit more what he is going to do and he is reading what we are going to be able to do to all link up together, and it is going well.

JP

Greg Abbott in his post-match interview was in pains to state that it is not all about Francois and Carlisle aren't just a one man team or anything like that. But, did you think today that maybe he didn't get the ball from other players in the right areas where he can hurt players? He was sometimes having to come a little bit deep for it.

JB

Yeah, I think they started in the same formation as us so it limited the space that he normally gets into, so it was tough for us to get him on the ball. But, when we do get him on the ball he looks dangerous and he looks like he can create something, so he is a key player for us I think.

JP

And transfer deadline day has just been and gone for the summer transfer window. What is it like for a player when any one of your team-mates could be taken away from you at the last minute and you could have new ones joining you as has been the case?

JB

Ian Harte has left, there were only a couple of days left and it was a big shock to see him go when he did, but it is a good move for him. It is just something you have got to deal with, that is football isn't it, people come and go so you have just got to deal with it.

JP

And you seem to have taken over a lot of the dead ball duties, and I think you had 17 or 18 corners today. Jeff Thorpe who was a wideman himself and knew about getting balls into a penalty area in his Carlisle days said he was impressed with your delivery, is that something you work on a lot?

JB

Yeah, on corners Kav (Graham Kavanagh) keeps telling me just to get it in a good area. So, I have just been concentrating on trying to get it in those good areas and try to take a bit to pace off, and I think a few of the corners today were decent, so I am happy with that.

JP

And what about the new men who have come into the squad for you, how have they settled and how long do you think it will take them to be right up to speed with everything that goes on in the Carlisle United eleven?

JB

Not long, it didn't take me long to get up to terms with what happens up here. I am enjoying it and I think the new boys that have just come in, Lubo (Lubomir Michalik) and Ben (Marshall) will definitely enjoy it and get to grips with it.
