Greg Abbott On The Brighton Defeat

Blues boss Greg Abbott
United boss Greg Abbott (GA) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) after Carlisle's 2-0 defeat at home to Brighton, Abbott understandably disappointed with United's third defeat in four home league games at the start of the season :

JP

Greg, what you do make of that today?

GA

Well obviously disappointed, disappointed that we couldn't keep the run going that we had built up. To be fair Brighton have come here and they have done a job on us in terms of getting men behind the ball. They have come to stop us playing to an extent, they have seen what type of football we have been playing and they have done a good job. We got frustrated that we have not been able really to get the quality into the box and into the front men that we have been getting in. We have probably not done enough to score goals and that is what you need to do.

JP

In a way they played like you away from home didn't they, they let you try and do all the running and made you work hard, and then they just kept snapping away.

GA

Yeah, the second goal was disappointing, we have got the lion's share of the possession and we are taking the game to Brighton and we can't quite find the pass or the movement to get us a goal. That was really their first attempt I think on goal in the second-half and it puts the game in a tough situation.for us. So they have played like an away side and they have got a reward for it. An early goal, the first goal is important in these games and the first goal for me is too soft, it is too easy, and that puts us on the back foot a little bit.

JP

Perhaps maybe a little bit sloppy, maybe a little bit not quite awake in the early stages for that one?

GA

We were awake but we haven't picked up Nicky Forster who has got 200 and odd league goals. So what we said when we were defending set-pieces and set-plays is the second ball gets cleared. We don't do enough to stop that coming back in our box and then when it comes back into your box you have got to be picking up men, certainly of the quality of him. He is Johnny on the spot and he seemed to ghost in too easily and we have then got it all to do.

JP

A lot of defensive work from an away team though and then one striker with a lot of quality like that pinching the result for the opposition, it is a bit of déjà vu from Exeter in a way isn't it.

GA

Yeah, but we have to try and find a way of dealing with that. We can't say we have deserved this or deserved that, you deserve what you generally get out of the game and we didn't do enough to win the game I didn't think today. We didn't find enough movement, enough quality, enough bravery if you like to get in on the end of stuff and make things happen in the opposition box. In that instance if you generally do concede a goal then you are going to come off second best and we have done today, and it is disappointing.

JP

Do you think, the guise of (Marcus) Stewart and Forster as we have seen, do you think that maybe Carlisle don't have that predator in those four strikers you have got at the moment? Do you think you need to get that out of one of them or do you think that maybe you need to get that into the club?

GA

Well that remains to be seen doesn't it, Richard Offiong has come on and he has shown us that he can get in on the end of things. He has shown us that he can be Johnny on the spot too. So the four strikers we have got are the strikers we have got and we are going to run with. Last week we were talking about all of them being good players, I am not going to change that in a seven day period. So we have to have a look at it and see how they do but we want goals and that is what they are there for, that is their job.

JP

It has been a good run of form, you are still in the top half of the table, 12th I think in the division so you are still in that top half. But is there a little bit of a concern that it is all happening away from home, it is not happening enough, is it one win in four now at Brunton Park?

GA

Not really, that is stuff that you people will look at and build up. I would much rather build it down you know, what we have got to do is we have got to find a way of dealing with teams that come and make themselves hard to beat. We have to find a way to beat them and today Brighton have come and got their eight men behind the ball and their two banks of four and made life difficult.

We like to get the two wingers isolated one v one and they dropped in and helped the defenders very well. They have got four centre-halves who are big bruisers who defended very well to be fair, they headed it, they cleared it, they did their jobs right and we couldn't break them down. We have got to find a way of doing that.

JP

Do you look forward almost now to the game at Oldham and the opportunity to go and do what Brighton have done to you today to Oldham?

GA

We just look forward to the next game because we want to get back on the winning track and not dwell too much on this one.

JP

You have beaten Oldham of course already in the cup this season, it will be different at Boundary Park and not being in the cup, but how do you approach the game following off the back of this?

GA

With the same sort of optimism that we are doing at the moment. We can't beat ourselves up too much after one defeat, like we can't build ourselves up too much after last week you know. So we go there and we will sit down and have a look at the way we are going to do things and then we will work all week and hopefully get a good result next week.

JP

I don't think, I mean there was a bit of booing at the end, but I think it was at the officials over the penalty call and a couple of other things. I think there is still the optimism, and with Matthew Robson, two weeks on the trot now man of the match, he is really turning into a good signing for you.

GA

Yeah, we are getting the ball out wide a fair bit, Kevan (Hurst) has just got a little bit of a problem with his knee. He has had a few problems with that and he wasn't firing on all cylinders today you know. But what we were trying to do is get the ball out to the wide players and get the balls into the box on a regular basis and get on the end of stuff. So Matty is one that has found a good performance today hasn't he, a really good performance again and we want more of them from him.

JP

And do you think that your midfield just lacked a little bit of that energy of Tom Taiwo today running through your team?

GA

Possibly, it would be harsh to single out any individuals as to why we lost you know, but collectively we lost the game and that is something we have to look at.

JP

With the failure to score and Richard Offiong doing what he did in the latter stages getting into some good positions, even if he couldn't quite put it away, has he maybe played his way into your thinking for that Oldham game?

GA

He has certainly given me a problem so like I said, we will have a look at that next week. We don't want to be making too many decisions within half an hour of the final whistle but it is something that we look at. What we want to do is try to get the right team to get the right result next week.
