Blues boss Greg Abbott
United boss Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips after Carlisle's 3-1 opening day defeat at home to Brentford, Abbott suggesting that the three goals the Blues conceded were pub-team goals :

" There is a lot of disappointment to be fair in terms of the result. I am really disappointed with the 20 minutes after half-time, the period where Brentford scored their two goals, that was my big bugbear with the game. There was a lot of good stuff in the game, a lot of chances created from our side, but the 20 minutes after half-time when we concede the second goal, which I think is a really, really soft goal, a cheap goal.

" Then I just thought then that we were going to get beat, we looked as a team like we were going to get beaten. We concede the third one which is a shocking goal the way that it is conceded and then to be fair they rallied after that and ended the game OK I suppose. That 20 minute period though tells me that some of the players couldn't accept some of the disappointment of the second goal and then gift the third. Then after that we are chasing the game and never looked like winning it.

" The first goal is a free header from a corner, (Myles) Weston has got a marker, he has left him by walking three yards across the face of the goal. The second goal the ball should have been dealt with in the box and then he has been allowed to turn too easy and Lenny (Pidgeley) has got to do better, he should make a save, that is just a goal that you have given them.

" Then the third one Matty Robson has given the ball away in a daft area, maybe he shouldn't have received the ball off Lenny but we are expecting players to be able to deal with that ball. It is straight to him, he gives it away cheap and then they have gone and it has got a deflection. Again though it is pub-team goals and we seem to concede them but we don't seem to get too many of them. That sums up our day, plenty of attacking play, plenty of chances to score, gifting teams goals, continue like that and we will all be in trouble. "

" I think that Matty Robson has got an unbelievable chance at 1-1, I think that Joe Anyinsah has got an unbelievable chance at 1-1. I think that the times the ball went into the box from corners and we got on the end of it and got the first header, one hit the bar as well, we just have to score in those situations. At half-time really we should be going in at least a goal up, we are not and then we gift a goal away.

" It is one of them, we have heard it all before, I don't want to make too many recollections of last season but that is exactly what happened. We can't when we are having decent spells not score and then when the thing is slightly against us concede goals as easy as we have done, otherwise like I said we are going to be in trouble.

" We have moved forward from last season, we have created a lot of chances today, we have put the ball in the box a lot today. In terms of results and in terms of conceding, well we haven't in that respect and people can ask what is different there, that is soft goals, we have got to put that right very, very quickly.

" I can't argue much of a case because the goals were really, all of them they didn't have to work to do it. We have conceded three goals at home and I did say that people must score and go away from here having treaded over dead bodies. Well they didn't have to tread over many dead bodies to score their goals today. "

" With the ball we look alright at times, well we looked alright quite a bit of the time. At this level though the game is about defending your goal, at any level, defend your goal first, have a good strong base and then you can work from there. If you don't get a defensive platform right then you have no chance and at times today our defensive work was shoddy to say the least.

" We need to start playing just OK and getting a clean sheet because the defenders have defended really, really well. If they can defend week in and week out then we will always create chances with the players that we have got. Then when we do then we have to make sure that we put them in, and that has been a bugbear as well from before.

" Making changes at the back is something that I will have to have a good think about, I am not going to make a reaction to that just now. It is something that I will have to look at, was it down to the back four or where there other areas. One of the back four wasn't picking up Weston, I will tell you that now so you can't sort of then just say well let's change a centre-half or let's change a full-back. It was a midfield player that was supposed to be picking up Weston so that you can't put down to them.

" The goalkeeper (Pidgeley) has made a freak mistake for the second or it has gone in too easy and then the third one our left-winger (Robson) has given the ball away. So it is a little bit harsh to always push all the blame onto your back four. "

" I have seen Scott Dobie come on with something to prove and I thought that he caused a few problems and he has put himself about. He has won a lot of headers, more than Joe (Anyinsah), maybe that is a combination that we look at. They will get an opportunity though, I think that it is wrong of me not to give them that.

" We do need a proven goalscorer but at the minute Gary Madine hasn't had his chance, he had a go pre-season, we don't think that he is quite ready yet but we are looking for him to continue his improvement. He has come back in a much better frame of mind this season and he will get an opportunity, but we need results now and we need goals now.

" I was pleased with Scott's contribution and we will work with the three that we have got and we will try to continue to bring another one in, and that search will start again as soon as I get off this. I would hope that we can do something on that front this week, obviously now the tribunal thing has sorted itself out we can start looking at that. It was right to talk about the game last night, now it is right to talk about improving the squad.

" It is good to have another game coming up (Oldham on Tuesday), we need to bounce back, we need to start scoring some goals, we need to get a clean sheet, that will give us confidence. They are not easy though, they are just words from me, that sounds dead easy to do but the players have got to go out there and make sure that happens. Clean sheets at one end and goals at the other end, it isn't too complicated really, that is the top and bottom of this game of football.

" I think that we were are OK on knocks at the minute, we might have some bumps and bruises but I think that the players looked alright in that sense when they came off. So hopefully on Tuesday we have got a full crew to pick from again."
