Greg Abbott On The Bournemouth Draw

Last updated : 17 March 2012 By Thetashkentterror

Greg Abbott 3United boss Greg Abbott (GA) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 1-1 League One draw away to Bournemouth, Abbott saying that the Cherries bombarded the Blues goal during the game :

JP

Despite the lateness of the goal you must be delighted with the effort and with a point today?

GA

Yeah, I mean it looked all over and we were going to hold out, we came under a bit of pressure, not probably by quality football, just by balls entering our box from every angle, from back to front, from side to side, from the throw-ins, corners, free-kicks. They just bombarded the goal and to be fair physically I thought that is as good as we have been, we have stood up, we have headed everything, we have cleared everything, we have got every second ball.

It looks like we are going to go all the way and just it was a set-piece at the end of it that was going to do it and it was, a corner I think. The boy (Miles Addison) gets up at the back-post and maybe the back-post could have been defended a bit better, he just seemed to get in a bit cheaply. But, under that sort of pressure it was maybe going to happen, but we had our half-chances we had in the game, but we were looking probably at seeing the game out and unfortunately we haven't been able to do that.

But, it is a fantastic point, this club is spending fortunes and fortunes of money and contrary to the run it is on they have got some quality players and they will win some more games between now and the end of the season, that is for sure. So, you have to look at this as a point gained, we have to make sure we get the benefit of that probably on Tuesday night against Preston.

JP

In commentary Chris Lumsdon and myself, Chris maybe suggested that the goal for you had maybe come too soon if that is possible because it changed your gameplan I would have thought?

GA

Yeah, we started the game really well to be honest, we actually stopped playing for a period after we got the first goal and sort of sat back a little bit and invited Bournemouth on. But, it is difficult not to sit back when they are launching the ball forward at such regular intervals from everywhere. It is not like a Bournemouth side I have seen play before, they have gone long which is not typical of the way they play it. But, they needed a win for their own situation and that is the way they have chosen to do it, we have stood up to that test and bravely, bravely come away with a point and possibly think we should have got three.

JP

Is that the key thing ahead of what is going to be a big local rivalry between you and Preston on Tuesday, the bravery, because they did put everything on the line here to hold Bournemouth out almost at the end of this?

GA

No, we don't expect any different from them you know, and if we want to be in the top six positions there is going to need to be more than that. We know what we are as a club, we know where we are resource wise and everybody has to batten down the hatches and do their best. Fair play to the boys today, they have kept their goal at bay near enough the whole of the 90 minutes, but it would have been nice to have seen it out.

JP

In the heart of the defence another good game from Peter Murphy and also the 440th start for him today, that is a new record for an outfield player for Carlisle?

GA

Yeah, I mean listen, Peter has done well this season for us and he has been a calming influence there. But, today it has not been his calmness, it has been him putting his head on the ball and Danny (Livesey) alongside him, they have both put their head on the ball, they have had to compete, (Wes) Thomas is a very good player, they paid a lot of money for him as well and they have kept him quiet basically at large. But, like I said, it was balls into the box that caused us troubles and that was what undid us in the end.

JP

In terms of the way their goal came so late on it was obviously one talking point in the match, another was a bit of a furore with two former team-mates of course, (Liam) Noble and (Harry) Arter and your dismissal at that point. What happened there?

GA

I don't know really, I absolutely don't know, their two, Lee (Bradbury) and Russell (Wilcox) are trying to get our man in trouble and I just tried to stop it and that was it. The next thing I know I am sat with the old boys in the stand swapping pleasantries there. I nearly got thrown out of there as well.

JP

Didn't you get thrown out of there? It seemed...........

GA

I tried, I tried my best, but that's part of the game isn't it. The referee (Phil Gibbs) will make what he wants of that but it spoils it really, I mean I didn't like the way they reacted to Liam, I think that is wrong, I would never do that. But, that was it, that is the way it goes.

JP

Anyone indicated at this stage why you were actually sent to the stands?

GA

I think I tried to pull the fourth official (Paul Rees) away from Kav (Graham Kavanagh), just pull him back, and he pushed me and pulled me and I don't know, that is what it was for in the end, so I think it is a little bit harsh but there you go.

JP

I know you have got a lot to think of today, Jordan Cook, any more movement on that with his situation at the moment?

GA

Yeah, we will have a look at it over the weekend, it is something obviously this takes some digesting now and then we will try to sort that our over the weekend.

JP

But a big performance just finally to get that point away from here today against a side who just did not want to let you leave with anything?

GA

Well, nobody wants you to leave with much, you have to earn everything you get in this league and I thought with our effort and our determination we have earnt a point here.
