Greg Abbott - Radio Cumbria Interview

Blues boss Greg Abbott
United manager Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday morning ahead of Carlisle's match away to Hartlepool tonight, Abbott first remembering the 2-2 draw at Victoria Park last season when John Ward was appointed the new United boss after the match :

" It might develop into one of those games, if I was good enough to forecast what type of game it is going to be then I would be a absolute top drawer person wouldn't I. You can never tell though, sometimes games pan out differently, I never saw that coming in the second-half on Saturday. So it is very difficult for me to say what type of game it is going to be, we know how we want to go and play, we know what we want to do and we will be concentrating on that.

" I think that they (Hartlepool) will be fired up anyway, it doesn't matter what their result was against West Ham, if they can't get fired up for a football match then that would be brilliant for us. Because we are fired up, I am fired up, and the players will be after they have had the training session today. So we have a good group don't we and they generally respond to what we are trying to do, so let's hope that they do it again tonight.

" It was a disappointment for me at Hartlepool last year when I found out that I wasn't getting the job, and you know that because I spoke to you straight afterwards. In this game you have highs and lows though, that was a low for me, the game was fantastic by the way and Danny Graham got his goals again and let's hope that he gets a couple more. I won't be upset by that though, sentiments no longer play a part in me, it is football, it is part of football, it is a cruel game, it is a good game and it is a bad game.

" It kicks you in the teeth, if it lifts you up then it makes you a hero, it makes you a villain, it has got everything hasn't it. So it is all about the players and it is all about how we approach the game, it is a game we think that we can get a result out of to kick-start us on another good run which hopefully will take us up the table.

" All our energy will be on getting a result out of tonight's game. You look at the table yesterday and it was disappointing because if we had got three points at Tranmere then we would have been 12th, which is a million miles away from where we were and where we looked like getting.

" So we have got to take that as a positive and take that as an incentive to say to come on and get the performance back on blob and get our gameplan going again and see where it takes us. Because 12th is not a million miles away from where we want to be ultimately, if we can get there then terrific but if not then let's consolidate and keep improving and moving the team forward as far as we think we can go. You never know in this game.

" Everybody wants us to attack and we had two wingers at Tranmere (Joe Anyinsah and Cleveland Taylor) that have got pace and power and strength. In the first-half they caused them all sorts of problems and in the second-half we starved them of the ball. So they are only as good as the service they get, as is Danny Graham, as is Scott Dobie, as is Gary Madine or whoever plays upfront alongside him. So more quality to the wide players and we will hopefully see them deliver into the box and get what we are looking for, and that is those goalscoring opportunities.

" The transfer window gives everybody something to talk about, these interviews would be boring wouldn't they if you didn't have the questions that you have been fielding me. Again, expect the unexpected, you never know what might happen. I have no idea what might happen in these next four or five days but we are ready to deal with whatever gets thrown at us inwards or outwards. "
