United caretaker boss Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday morning as he talked about the 3-1 win at Bournemouth at the weekend as well as previewing the upcoming game at Hartlepool tonight :

" We were always optimistic that we could go down there and get something out of the game. We set out the game-plan like we have for every game. Sometimes they work, sometimes they are harder to put into practice but on Saturday a lot of the attacking ideas that we had came off. We had a stream of attacks, especially in the first-half and I was absolutely delighted with the performance of the players.

" You are talking about being bold or about being sensible playing two wingers, I'm talking about being sensible attacking with wide players. They have a job to do as well defensively though, when they lose the ball they know what to do as well which is important. Obviously they are in the side there to take players on, to create goalscoring opportunities, to get crosses in and supply the front two. I thought that they did that well, although they both tired with obviously the lack of games that they have had. I thought that their contributions were excellent throughout the game.

" I'd like to think I can remember my first professional goal, but I can't it's that long ago. It's always a good occasion for a player, he (Joe Anyinsah) will have thought his career was at a little bit of a standstill. He was not really doing much and struggling with a few injuries, not major ones but minor ones that were holding back his progress. He's got a game on Saturday, he's shown an appetite for the game and he's got a goal, he'll remember that for the rest of his career because it is a special thing, we are pleased for him for that.

" I keep stressing that we don't need to make a big thing about Joe Garner. He's 19, I keep calling him 18, everybody that is a young 'un - I call them 18. He's 19 though, he's a baby in football terms and as a striker he has so much to learn, but we need to keep that freshness, we need to keep him fearless and keep that appetite of youth going.

" We need to not heap any pressure on him because he will go through periods where he finds things tough because he is at such a tender age. I think that we have to realise that and cajole him through, encourage him and make sure that he gets the right sort of backing from everybody. It's physical and mental, you saw him at the end of the game, he was near enough out on his knees, mentally it takes more out of a young 'un than it does an older player.

" We've got to try to get the pitch right with the way we manage him and if I see fit to leave him out because he is getting a little bit tired physically or mentally then I'll do that. I'll decide that and I'll judge him on game to game, what I want from Joe is to get 40 or 50 appearances out of him this season. To get that I think that we've got to be careful how we use him, it's not a choice thing to leave him out, it's a must thing at times. "

" If he proves me different then we keep him banging the goals in and we keep him performing like he is doing. If we get another 20 games on the trot like we did on Saturday then I don't think that there will be much chance that I can do that in terms of taking him out. Let's just see him game-to-game and week-to-week and we'll manage him how I'll see fit.

" I go everywhere with optimism that we can get a result and I go everywhere thinking that it might have to be slightly a different style of play. I'm not saying that it will be but different games require different things. We've obviously had Hartlepool watched, we know what they are all about and the result on Saturday again could work against them or work for them. We've got to again, make sure we get off to a good start in the game and not give them any encouragement.

" Two more games and we are nearly a quarter of a way through the season so that's encouraging. They will be keen to put right their mini-crisis of one game beaten on Saturday and we'll put on our great run of form of one win on Saturday into practice and see how we marry off. I would take Hartlepool United 0-1 Carlisle United but if they get a goal then you would probably accept that you just don't want to lose the game.

" We go into every game trying to win it, the next best thing is a draw and the thing after that we don't want to talk about. We've just got to be positive, everybody has got to be positive and I certainly am, hopefully it all goes to plan and we're all happy come Tuesday night. It's going to be a good one again isn't it, again it's two sides with different ideas and play in slightly different ways.

" It's two sides that I think will be anxious to get something out of the game, so I'm sure Danny (Wilson) will have his team set out to have a go at us and we will probably try to do the same against him. The night thing is good, again we're back on track, another game is fantastic, the week goes quickly and everyone is excited again.

" No news, nothing just at the moment, I'm just doing the job like it's mine. I'm going to make life as uncomfortable as I can for everybody connected here to turn it down but I think we're doing smashing at the moment. I'm really pleased with the way the players have responded, I'm really pleased with where we are in the table and that things we are starting to work on are starting to come off. I'm quite comfortable with that and let's hope that the board see that the same way. "
