Gary Johnson Talks About The Game

Gary JohnsonYeovil boss Gary Johnson spoke to BBC Radio Somerset after his side's 3-2 League One defeat against Carlisle at Brunton Park, Johnson saying bad defending cost the Glovers the game :

"It was defensive indecision for all three goals really and certainly poor defending. That is what we have said in the dressing room and we are going to have to have a good look at that because when you score two goals and have the amount of chances again we had away from home, two goals really should be enough to win it anywhere.

"We should be good enough not to let in three goals but that is what happened today, obviously we got back to 2-2 and the lads deserved to be back at 2-2 with their second-half performance. We were still going for it without leaving ourselves open, but just a moment's indecisiveness for the third goal and it gets them in and you lose 3-2 after a game that really you should have got something out of.

"So, the positives of that, we scored two, we should have got something out of the game, we had lots of opportunities, it was quite an open game anyway but individuals have got to work very, very hard on their decision making when they are defending, because at the moment that is what is probably costing the club its results on occasions.

"All players at any level make mistakes, it is just how many mistakes they make is the important thing, and if things keep happening then you obviously have to change the personnel of course of the ones that are making the individual errors. But, at the moment I have got to give everybody the opportunity to show what they have got and what they can do.

"But, meanwhile we have been winning 50% of our games still and we have got to keep doing at least that to stay out of trouble. I don't know how the other results went today but we are just disappointed to be travelling home not having got something out of the game."

"I thought the new boys looked alright, Jonathan Franks if we can get him the ball, we didn't get him enough of the ball in the first-half but our midfield was overrun by their midfield in the first-half in my opinion. But, we came out and we were much better in the second-half. I wanted Jonathan Grounds to play a part in the game, I thought Nathan Jones was doing alright actually, but I just wanted another big one because I knew we were going to have to chase the game a bit.

"Grounds was so unlucky with the shot that the keeper (Adam Collin) made his one and only fantastic save on, although the one that hit the bar at 2-2, there were a lot of oohs and aahs from us where Gavin Williams hit over the bar from a really good position. So, we did have opportunities to win the game, anyway, there you go, so we can't cry over it now, we have just got to learn from it.

"I think Dean Parrett will be close to coming back next Saturday, Tottenham will release him come Monday or Tuesday and he will start training with us and we have got a full week still. But, hopefully he will be available because he is a decent player, he is not the reason why we win and lose on his own but at the same time it is always handy to have a player of his ilk and his way of playing around the place, we are better with him than without him anyway.

"How annoying as well was it that Paul Huntington was out for four games when he shouldn't have been, no way, and I will argue until the cows come that that was a really poor decision, as I thought the penalty decision was today to be fair. I don't know how anyone can get their arms out of the way, it is not as though the ball is going in the goal.

"They were having a bit of a head of steam and the crowd get behind them after the first ten minutes that we dictated, and I thought the referee (Scott Mathieson) gave them an opportunity there to be ahead in the game. But, every week all managers are finding themselves arguing about these decisions, so what else can you do, so I had better shut up."
