David Amoo Talks About The Game

Last updated : 06 April 2014 By Thetashkentterror

United frontman David Amoo (DA) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Paul Newton (PN) following Carlisle's 1-0 League One win at home to Swindon, Amoo saying it was a tough game for the Blues:

PN

That was a much needed win today wasn’t it?

DA

Yeah, we needed the win, we haven’t won in a while and it was a tough game, it was tough. A lot of work, these wins with the position we are in are hard to get, we have got to work hard for them. So, it was great to get three points.

PN

As you say, it had been quite a while since that last win, I think eight games, nine games was it. Was that something that you spoke about in the dressing room, were you aware of that?

DA

I think we just have to keep that in the back of our mind and forget about it and just think that we have got seven games to do the best we can. Because, we can’t control what has already happened but we can learn from it and try to move on from it. I thought we did well, we worked really hard and we deserved it.

PN

The frustrating thing for you as a team I guess is that you have been defending exceptionally well, that is four clean sheets out of the last five, but not been able to get that cutting edge as well. But, obviously Gary Madine provided that at a crucial moment today?

DA

Yeah, it is fantastic yeah. I think defensively we have been fantastic, the clean sheets have been great. I think the lads have been missing a few chances last week as well. I was watching the Shrewsbury game and we missed loads of chances that game, so I think we have deserved more from some of the games. Hopefully fingers crossed, six more games, massive games, cup finals for us and hopefully we get some points on the board.

PN

What has Gary Madine been like around the club over the last couple of weeks or so?

DA

Oh, he has been fantastic you know. Playing upfront with him has been fantastic, he knows the position well, he has played loads of league games so for a player like me playing with him it has been fantastic. Just having him give me little tips of what to do and stuff like that, he has been great, he is a fantastic player.

PN

A much more central role of course for you today, how much did you enjoy that?

DA

Yeah, it was good, it was good. I think there are only seven games and I think we are going with this formation of wing-backs, so I think just to accommodate me the gaffer [Graham Kavanagh] has stuck me upfront. So, I don’t mind, wherever I can help the team, stretch the game for us, I don’t mind playing anywhere.

PN

I have got to ask you about that penalty, was it, wasn’t it in the first-half, the handball, it certainly looked from our commentary position like it was a handball?

DA

Yeah, I thought it was, I thought it was, but in the position we are in we don’t get much luck. So, fingers crossed we will get some more luck in the next few games.

PN

The team worked exceptionally hard today and certainly if the football isn’t quite as fluid then it is all about working hard, closing teams down and that is what you did today?

DA

Definitely, I think the position we are in, we play good football at times but in the position we are in we are going to have to start grafting results out. The pretty football if we are sitting comfortably tenth, we would like to play a bit more exciting football and stuff like that but we have just got to grind these results out at this position in time. Kind of like what we have done today, hopefully we can have more of that.

PN

Obviously, you have been on the sidelines for a couple of weeks with the injury, I guess at this stage of the season that was massively frustrating for you?

DA

Yeah, it has been frustrating, touch wood though, I think they were the first games I was like out through injury. So, I can’t really complain about that, I have played my fair share of games, but yeah it was frustrating. Last week I wasn’t at the game but I was always on my phone checking the score and it is tense, especially the position we are in, it is very tense.

I was reading it and they hit the bar and you are scared, it is just like because you have no control over it, when you are on the pitch you can control what is going on. But, from the sidelines it is frustrating, it is tough, but it is good to be back yeah.

PN

In terms of where the club are at at the moment, the team are at, six more games to go and you will have seen no doubt that other sides around you at the bottom today have got wins, which underlines just how important it was getting three points today. You get the feeling it is going to go right down to the final day?

DA

Yeah, it is, and we don’t want to look too far ahead but Wolves away the last game of the season, that is interesting, that could be interesting. So, fingers crossed let’s get it wrapped up before the end.

PN

And more immediately a big game for you I guess going back to Preston next Saturday?

DA

Yeah, it is a massive one a personal note. Preston obviously I was there last season and I know the lads well, they are playing well and they are doing well. So, it should be interesting next week and fingers crossed more of the same.

PN

Still United’s top goalscorer this season, and Graham Kavanagh has been at pains to make a point when he has done his interviews that this season perhaps you have played more football more regularly than at any point in your career, how have you found that so far?

DA

Yeah, it has been good, the gaffer has given me an opportunity and I have to thank him. He has stuck me in even times where I probably wasn’t doing well, he stood by me and I owe him a lot. he has been fantastic with me, so he has been great for me just giving me that opportunity.
