Danny Livesey Talks About The Game

United defender Danny Livesey (DL) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) following Carlisle's 4-2 League One victory at home to Portsmouth, Livesey saying that the Blues needed the win after the 3-0 Brunton Park defeat against Tranmere on Tuesday:

DL

We needed that, especially after Tuesday, we needed a response, especially for ourselves, the fans, everybody who came down. We feel that we have got that apart from 89 minutes onwards where the game just got a little bit silly, but a win is a win and that is all we needed.

JP

And I know the defenders never like conceding, four goals either scored or conceded from both sides in those closing stages of the match, it was barmy?

DL

Yeah, it was crazy, they get someone (Kevin Long) sent off and we should be professional enough to finish them off. We have just allowed them to come into it, we have not kept our shape all over the field, we have conceded stupid goals and we can't be happy with that if we are going to set our standard this season. For 89 minutes we were quite happy, we were in control, and then all of a sudden we finish like that and it just takes the gloss off it a little bit.

JP

There were one or two stages when they just sort of inexplicably were through on goal Portsmouth, is it just sort of coming to terms with all the changes and things like that? Sometimes people aren't picking up the right men at certain stages?

DL

No, I think it is a bit of both, it is bad defending and it is good movement from the striker (Izale McLeod), ultimately that is what Adam (Collin) is there for when they get through, he has done it today. He has taken a little bit of stick but he has played really well today, he saved one of the one on ones and the other one he (McLeod) has fallen over, which is always pleasing to see.

JP

You are talking there about Izale McLeod's air shot as he got through on his left foot, a funny game from him, he threatened and looked like he might do something really good and then it just never quite seemed to materialise?

DL

Yeah, we were saying that in the changing room actually, I mean he has got all the makings of being world, well not world class but you know, a decent centre forward, and like you say he just never seemed to do that much. He has got it in and he has given it away, he has got through and has not scored, and me and Murph (Peter Murphy) will take a bit of credit for that.

JP

Yeah, well it was between you and Murph, you got the sponsors man of the match, definitely between you for the man of the match, how pleased were you to be reunited with your old mate back in there?

DL

Yeah, it was nice you know, me and Mike (Edwards), we did well at Stevenage, we did well at Accrington, and then Tranmere wasn't great so Murph coming in, we have played enough, we need no introduction to each other, we know how each other play, and I think that is why he (Greg Abbott) went for me and Murph ultimately because we didn't need time to settle.

JP

Not that much that you guys could have done with the goals was there when they are of that sort of calibre?

DL

No, but when you come away with a 3-0 defeat everyone looks straight away at the back four, we were discussing this, if you take the two free-kicks and the one shot he (Andy Robinson) has had then there is nothing else in the game, but we look like we have taken a bit of a pasting.

JP

Yeah, what are you looking forward to now from the Ipswich game, they have got pasted 6-0 against Blackpool today, so they might have just moved things around a little bit you would have thought for the League Cup to take on Carlisle, but it might be now that Paul Jewell decides to sort of send the same eleven up here, it could be a big reaction from them?

DL

Yeah, you know, especially after getting a 6-0 they need to get a response like we needed to. So, you would expect them to come up here and play their strongest team, so it will be a tough game and hopefully we can get at them early and put a bit of pressure on them. Because, I don't care who you are, it is never nice coming off the back of a 6-0, there is still a bit of pressure on you.
