John Ward, who was speaking exclusively to Cheltenham Town's official website www.cheltenhamtownfc.premiumtv.co.uk, had the following to say on his team's FA Cup First Round win over the Blues :

"I am delighted with the spirit of my team but I have never doubted it's been there. We've only lost a couple of games on the trot and we've just said, 'Lets get on with it'. It's a big win for us because it re-instates the confidence we have in the club, and more importantly it re-instates a bit of confidence in the supporters.

"They haven't seen how hard we have worked over the last couple of weeks but I thought they were terrific today. We've competed well on and off the pitch with Carlisle today and I'd like to thank the supporters for doing that today. They've had their ups and downs, but when we've had a down, we come back reasonably quickly and we've done that again this afternoon.

"Grant [McCann] has been extremely positive all week. He had a very nasty ankle injury last weekend [in the game against Mansfield] and we were probably looking at six weeks of absence in the face. Grant and Ian Weston have worked very hard on that ankle all week and the result [of the scan] came on Thursday and he said he wanted to play. His positive approach typifies what we have been trying to do and it is very fitting that he has got the winning goal today.

"I saw the flag up [for the disallowed goal in the 93rd minute] and I pointed to the supporters behind me and said, 'He's got his flag up there!'. Carlisle will be disappointed that they haven't got a last minute equaliser but we wanted the game today and we were determined so if we've got a little break at the end then so be it.

"We have been affected by goals against us. We have started very determinedly in all games but when we fall behind, like the second goal against Mansfield last week, or when Kay [Odejayi] hit the post before that, we are affected. We say, 'It's not what you do but the way you think', and we've gone out in the mood today to win the game.

"Carlisle are a very good team and we have competed very well with them. We had a lot of blocking to do in the first half particularly to stop shots when Carlisle had a good spell and all those things have added up to a good FA Cup win for our team today. We've beaten a very good team and that also is a plus for us.

"Brian [Wilson] has just tightened up his hamstrings. He has worked fantastically hard for us today,as all my team have, but we feel there is no real danger there, it's just a bit of tiredness. Hopefully, we've caught that quickly.

"This result will help [to attract a loan signing]. I'll put the request to the Chairman and the Board and I'll hope they are as positive as they were last week.

"I've tried to put everything into perspective. I keep getting told that we are in a bad spell but we have only lost two games. We won at Shrewsbury, and people forget that. If you speak to Paul Simpson, he'll tell you that he had four consecutive defeats and yet we look at it from a distance and say what a good team they are and how well they're doing. We are four points behind them in the table and we've just picked up a very important win for us. The dressing room is strong, but when you lose a game people don't believe me. We have to prove it on the pitch and we have done that today."
