United midfielder Grant Smith spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he talked about his first game in Carlisle colours :

" I knew on Thursday really I was playing when unfortunately (Paul) Thirlwell got injured and I knew I had a chance. It gives you less time to prepare but I've been waiting a while since my last start I suppose so I just got ready and that was it. I'm still catching my breath there just coming up the stairs, especially with that being my first start I think in about three and a half months. Adrenaline gets you through a lot though so I got through today which was important.

" I haven't played in this division for a couple of years maybe before that because I was in Scotland or abroad, it's the same as when I left really, it's fast. The gaffer (John Ward) gave me a job to do in there today and I think that when you know that you have got a certain job it's a bit easier sometimes because you know exactly what to do. I enjoyed it anyway.

" The first-half chance was on my wrong foot, it's never a chance when it's on my right foot, never ever. I was disappointed though, because it was on my right foot and it was bobbling a little I just tried to strike through it. I actually made a good contact, it was one of them, on my right foot I wouldn't fancy me at all, even from half that distance. It was a good strike on my right foot if it had been in the middle of the park but when it was from that distance it wasn't good, but never mind, hopefully I can get a few more chances and then a goal.

" When you come in today, that's one of those things, you are coming into the unbeaten run and you don't want to be the person coming in and stopping it in a way by not winning. So it was important for me as well to be part of it today and still keep that record going. So that was the main thing for me, just get the win, because that has pushed us right up there now as well with a game in hand.

" It breeds confidence, Tuesday, it's good that we've got this game straight away now coming off a great victory against a team that is up there. Obviously Crewe, I don't know what their result today was, but we have got a chance now on Tuesday.

" I think taking my chance was one of my main things today because I have only got, the gaffer has given me the opportunity to the end of the season. I knew that when I signed I was going to get one chance at least and it was about taking it. Hopefully today, it's just about staying in there and being in the squad and being part of it. That was the main thing for me today and the gaffer having the confidence now that he can use me in games, so hopefully it's worked out well. "
