Andy Hall - Radio Cumbria Interview

United media officer and first team kitman Andy Hall (AH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) ahead of Carlisle's League One match at home to Sheffield Wednesday, Hall first talking about Matty Robson continuining at left-back for the Cumbrians :

JP

An unchanged starting line-up for this game?

AH

Yeah, I don't think you can blame Greg (Abbott) for that the way the lads have been playing recently, but Gary Borrowdale must have been a test of a decision for him, but Robbo (Matty Robson) is doing OK I think isn't he.

I think in the first-half on Tuesday night the word defence didn't exist, both sides were just going for it, but in the second-half both teams tightened up, and you can see that there is quite a nice little unit developing at the back there.

JP

In terms of the forward line, a few people might have brought in Craig Curran but might have brought him in perhaps for Francois Zoko, but Greg Abbott went with what he felt in there and those two players scored, so he will be happy with that?

AH

Absolutely that, and Francois you just never know what you are going to get, he can be quiet for 44 minutes and then turn it on and you have got a goal. Obviously, pepole want more than that from him but he is a good player, so again it is a decision for the manager to make.

JP

The return of Gary Madine today, great to see him back and he looks like he is starting to do well there as well?

AH

From what the fans are saying he is starting to really fit in isn't he and he is getting his goals. I think he came off the bench in one of Gary Megson's first games and scored the only goal in a defeat. So, he causes problems does Gary, that is why everybody was looking at him for so long.

From the minute we signed him professionally we have had enquiries, big clubs like Coventry have had a look at him so he does something right. If he keeps going the way he is then he is going to be fantastic.

JP

Something I have just been chatting about with a couple of fans outside is, look at the form of Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle United, look at the size of the clubs, look at everything, and you would say that it is never one that you would expect to win. But, where they are in the table, looking at stats alone, Carlisle United should really be looking for three points today?

AH

Definitely, we played them here recently and we played them off the park, it was one of our best performances, and that was when they had a little bit of form behind them as well, so anything can happen if you are on your game. People seem to forget that we have got some good players here, and when they are playing well we are a very difficult team to deal with.

JP

For whatever reason, despite your good run of form on the road, the gate was a bit low on Tuesday night for the Exeter game, dropping below 4,000, which I am sure is not great news for the club. We are hoping that Sheffield Wednesday are going to significantly swell that today, and maybe on the strength of the form a few more will come back as well with this game in mind?

AH

Yeah, absolutely that, we have looked at promotions as well through this season, we have done a couple already, and the frustrating thing for us is that the ticket promotions don't seem to work for whatever reason in Carlisle. You look around at other clubs and they will say that they have had a 10% pick-up or a 15% pick-up, we just don't seem to get that.

So, whatever it is that is keeping fans away above and beyond the financial situation, we are going to have to try to work really hard to tap into that because we need them to come back. We genuinely want to get this club to the Championship, but you can't do it on crowds of 3,500.

JP

A few fans talking about the £2 for the Oldham game that they did there, could you try something like that just to get the bodies in here and see if they enjoy the game again?

AH

That needs backing because Oldham didn't take a risk on that, they had a lot of businesses who backed them with that. So, again, you would need to find the sponsors who would be willing to cover the shortfall to enable you to do it.

Everybody talks about the prices at Premier League level, but again they have got the television money that helps them to do it. All we can do is say that we need to take the club forward, so anything we do do has got to be balanced, but we are definitely looking at it.

JP

And we need the fans and we need three points here today?

AH

It would be nice wouldn't it.
