Andy Hall - Radio Cumbria Interview

Last updated : 15 February 2011 By Thetashkentterror

United media officer and first team kitman Andy Hall (AH) spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips (JP) ahead of Carlisle's League One match away to Walsall, Hall first talking about the late injury to Blues defender Peter Murphy :

JP

In terms of the team, no Peter Murphy in the matchday squad, what is the latest there?

AH

Yeah, Peter was doing something at home last night, infact he was doing not much and he leaned over and he had a back spasm. He phoned Dolly (Neil Dalton) straight away and let Dolly know. Unfortunately this morning it was a little bit tight still so when we got on the bus it tightened up a little bit more.

We have got here and there is just no way that we can risk Peter, particularly when he is playing so well you want him to get through it as quickly as possible. Back spasms are awful things, anybody who has had back trouble will say amen to that one.

So, we just want to get him through it and get him back. So, that brings Tom Cruise back on the left-hand side, James Chester and Lubo (Lubomir Michalik) will re-partner themselves at the heart of the defence.

JP

Can you confirm whether Peter Murphy would have been in the starting eleven again today?

AH

I think I will probably get myself in trouble, but yes he was.

JP

Thank you for that. In terms of Tom Cruise then it is a big chance for him, we will talk about him in a moment because we must talk about the youngster on the bench in Josh Todd. I was sort of thinking who is that when I was reading it out a few moments ago with the team, so tell us who that is?

AH

Josh is a first-year YTS still at Brunton Park. You don't want to big these lads up too much because they can show talent one year and then disappear the next. But, Josh has trained with the first-team quite frequently recently, Greg (Abbott) thinks a lot of him and Eric (Kinder) thinks a lot of him.

He is a level headed young lad and hopefully something like this is another added experience for him. Certainly an experience for me having to register him at 9am this morning, that was a right flap on I can tell you. So, that left me a little bit late getting down here but it is all done. Who knows? Maybe when we are 10-0 up with 40 minutes gone, on he will come.

JP

People who follow you as cufckit on twitter will find it hard to believe you having a flap?

AH

Oh, seriously, because the fax wouldn't work was the first thing. So, trying to fax it through and it is bouncing back and you are just thinking that we cannot leave with an unregistered player, I would get absolutely hammered for that. So, we got it done and he is on.

JP

In terms of the match today, of course Greg Abbott signing this two year extension to his contract and talking about the aim in that period being to get Carlisle if he can up into the Championship. If you are going to do that I suppose these are the sort of ones you need to be winning as a manager and a club?

AH

As a club, certainly with the board of directors that is the way that we have worked over the last couple of years. It has always been our understated aim that we are just going to keep working hard, run the place in, I hate to use the word business in football, but you have got to run it as a business and let's see where it goes.

We think we are doing it right so it is now more of a case of let's tell people what it is we want to do. We want to take the club to the Championship, it is has got to be our aim, whether the Premier League would follow that who knows?

You have got to have that period of consolidation, you have got to look at the likes of Scunthorpe and Blackpool, Scunthorpe in particular on a very small ground and crowds probably the same size as we would we get. They have managed to do the job, and not just stay there but consolidate and make themselves a very difficult team to beat, competing and signing players that are Championship standard players.

So, that has got to be the aim, I think we are in the position now where we can say that. Certainly with Greg I think, again he will probably slap me down for saying it but I think he has grown into the job certainly over the last 18 months and he feels much more comfortable himself in what he is doing and what he is trying to achieve.

The players he is bringing in are backing him up all the way on what it is that he wants to achieve and who knows? If we keep doing this, keep picking these players up and keep going the way we are going, then Championship here we come.

JP

You will get yourself in trouble with Greg talking about Championship then maybe Premier League, talk about putting the pressure on him?

AH

Yeah, I know, but you know what I mean by that?

JP

Well, when you look at Blackpool it can happen.

AH

It can happen and even if it was just for one season who knows? But, I think that the genuine definite aim has got to be let's try to get Carlisle United into the Championship. It is not that long ago you know that I can remember as a little boy standing on the terraces in the Paddock watching Championship football, Division Two as it was back then.

JP

Could be fantastic to see, just finally on that starting line-up it kind of sells itself as the 4-4-2 with (Ben) Marshall and (Mike) Grella in the wide positions and (Francois) Zoko and (Gary) Madine upfront. But, do you expect Zoko to drop into the hole a bit and Grella and Marshall to sort of come up alongside him and almost have that 4-2-3-1 look about it again?

AH

Almost, but you mentioned the name Ben Marshall there and he has been a revelation in the past few weeks, he is absolutely bombing around is Ben Marshall. Who knows what he does? He gets his instructions and he does his Ben Marshall thing and long may that continue because he is back involved.

JP

He really is isn't he, because I must confess there were some fans who were questioning whether he had come back the same player as when he left Carlisle from his loan last season. For a little while it didn't really look like he was but he has found his feet again.

AH

He has, and maybe it was just the fact that he needed to play in the reserve games that he played, get a bit of confidence with the goals that he has scored there and he has taken off.
