Andy Hall - Radio Cumbria Interview

United media officer and first team kitman Andy Hall spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's James Phillips ahead of Carlisle's League One match away to Exeter, Hall first talking about the slightly sandy pitch at St James Park this afternoon :

" I think when you have had a start to the season like this the only thing to do is feel positive and try to carry it on. That is certainly what we are here down at Exeter's home today to try to do. I have been on the pitch, it is very, very sandy it has to be said, the grass is actually pulling up quite easily. So, it will be interesting which team deals better with that because I think that will be a factor today.

" The pitch is quite flat at the moment, but certainly it is better to play it now at this stage of the season when there is no rain on there than it would be in a couple of months time I think. Because, certainly when we were here last time we found it heavy going, it is anything but today so it is going to be down to the team that gets the touch quickest and first that will be able to move on and win the game.

" I think the key for Exeter's 3-5-2 is who sits behind the front two, whether it will be (Ryan) Harley, (James) Dunne or (Liam) Sercombe in the middle there. I think all three of them are interchangeable from what Greg has been telling the boys. Harley is a very dangerous player, he is one that you are going to flag up, Dunne is equally as dangerous but in a different way.

" So, whoever it is that sits behind those front two of (John) O'Flynn and (Richard) Logan I think it is, that it is going to make it very, very difficult for Carlisle United. I just try to earwig for all this stuff as much as I can in the pre-match team-talk. It could cancel out our diamond but if we work hard it could mean that they are struggling to get themselves onto the ball and we will be passing through them.

" You have seen what Francois (Zoko) can do, you have seen what James Berrett can do when he has got his foot on the ball, and Ollie Norwood will sit in front of the back four. If he is given time, and he needs that protection from (Tom) Taiwo and Berrett, if he is given time then he can spray it around. "

" Ben Mckenna is a confident lad and you can see that in the way that he plays his football. We saw it at Falkirk when he set up the Carlisle United goal for Andy Cook. He has brought it into the first-team stuff, he did his little introductory speech just after the meal last night at the hotel and he just fell into it as if he had been a professional all his life.

" That is important for these young lads because they feel part of it, he entered into the spirit of it fully and who knows? If the game is going well then we might even see him appear. If we win today you know where we could go if the Brighton against Charlton game goes our way, so let's wait and see.

" Not to give too much away about Mike Grella but there was a lot of discussion on the bus on the way down yesterday. I know I think Greg (Abbott) told you earlier in the week that he will think about his team selection almost at the start of the week.

" This one held him back a little bit because it is what do you do? Do you break up a winning team and take it that way? Do you give your new signing the start that he is obviously hungry for? That is why he is here. Or do you stick with what has been working and see how it goes? Mike is going to get his chance one way or another, we all know that. "
